Don't do it.. for so many reasons.
Any reasonably intelligent person can be trained to do the work so you are really competing against a lot of people, art majors, etc who have friends who know the hiring manager and can get them an interview.
The work can be extremely dehumanizing. Can go days without really needing to talk to another person to do the work.
Schools are constantly pumping out GIS analysts so when you are laid off you're competing against those people.
A lot of the GIS projects require a lot of low skilled workers. Digitizing large areas, etc. Unless you're one of the two or three managers of the project, you aren't really learning anything a 7th grader couldn't do. Many of the jobs would be outsourced but there is a govt requirement the workers be US citizens.
In order to progress you really need to know programming, so why not just become a CS major since they could easily do anything a GIS Analyst could.
