President Trump reportedly wants to appoint four Supreme Court justices by end of first term
President Trump reportedly wants to appoint four Supreme Court Justices by the end of his first term.
Trump, who has already appointed Neil Gorsuch to replace late Justice Antonin Scalia, predicted Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg won’t last long in the Supreme Court, sources told Axios.
The sources who spoke with Trump asked how the President came to that conclusion. Instead, he boasted about his Gorsuch appointment and mentioned rumors that Justice Anthony Kennedy might retire, according to the Axios report published on Sunday.
“So that's two,” one source said. “Who are the others?”
“Ginsburg,” the President replied, singling out the 84-year-old justice. “What does she weigh? 60 pounds?”
“Who's the fourth?” asked the source.
“Sotomayor,” Trump said. “Her health. No good. Diabetes.”
The 63-year-old Sotomayor, who became the first Latina to serve on the Supreme Court when President Barack Obama nominated her in 2009, has openly discussed her life as a diabetic since being diagnosed as a child.
“It wasn’t so bad, but it was still bad,” Sotomayor told a group of diabetic youth in Washington, D.C. in 2011. “It was still something that I had to deal with, grow up with and figure out how to live with.”
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
