EDWARDSVILLE, IL — An Illinois man has pleaded not guilty to threatening to assassinate President Donald Trump. According to court documents, Joseph Lynn Pickett appeared in U.S. District court Wednesday. He was arrested after two former coworkers reported threatening posts he allegedly made to his Facebook page on June 14 and 15, according to to a complaint filed earlier this month.

A complaint filed June 15 by U.S. Secret Service Special Agent Vincent Pescitelli includes screenshots of posts allegedly made by Pickett stating that Trump "sold our country to the Russians" and "needs a blade in his neck."

Another post appeared to taunt the Secret Service — and Facebook friends who expressed concern — saying, "The secret service now has a heads up to my plan to assassinate Trump ... let's see if they act!"

Pickett—deemed not to be a threat to the community was released "own recognizance," or "O.R.," no bail money was paid to the court and no bond is posted. Pickett was merely released after promising, in writing, to appear in court for all upcoming proceedings.

If a suspect who has been released on their own recognizance fails to appear in criminal court as scheduled, they are subject to immediate arrest, and any chance for having reasonable bail set is all but eliminated.

Pickett will be required to immediately attend anger management classes, surrender his passport and had to agree not to associate with known gang members or convicted felons according to his attorney.

The District Attorney argued unsuccessfully that: "with a lack of family in the area, and a lack of employment and in light of the recent attack on members of the GOP in Virginia, people who post rants such as this should be taken at their word."

The DA was a real windbag and continued: "There are no justifications that can explain away posting the material that Pickett did. He needs to be held accountable."

"One thing that can be observed after many of the recent attacks that have occurred in the United States is that where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire."

After ten minutes of the DA ranting the judge still refused to make Pickett post bail. If convicted, Pickett could be sentenced to up to five months in federal prison.

One of Pickett’s most recent Facebook posts shows a Facebook user commenting and asking Joe if he was involved in an assassination plot against the president. Joe reportedly bragged on Facebook that he owned an AR-15 and AK-47. Other posts on Pickett’s Facebook page pointed to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
