Many years ago, when I drove a cab for this company in D.C., I got sent to NBC on Nebraska Ave. to pick him up. He gets in the cab and wants to go to Benning-Stoddard Rec, Ctr. Now back then, my company used to let drivers know if a trip was going somewhere most drivers didn't want to go, but since it was Vance, I knew why I had gotten stuck with this one.

Now, he got in, was nice about it and asked me to take a particular route, which was fine with me. Then, he let loose. It seems the company had sent him another driver. This driver pretended not to know how to get there, was going to jack up the legal rate and went through enough of a song and a dance that Vance said "fuck this" (literally-that's what he told me he said). This guy was a foreigner and suddenly acted like "me nut berry goot Inglush speek". So Vance called another cab and got me. I took him there, he paid me and gave me a OK tip.

The next night, he gets on Channel 4 and does this editorial about how these foreign cab drivers who don't speak English, don't know where they're going and won't carry people. He told the story about how they sent him this black African guy who wouldn't take him, so he called them back and they sent this white American guy who did take him (that was me).

Rest in peace, Mr. Vance.
