Back in the 60s people were "nationalists", buying American was important to them; everyone sacrificed and came together during wwii and they were loyal Americans. Then inflation and energy crisis hit people in the wallet and the govt came up with emissions controls that caused US companies to totally redesign - lots of bugs resulted - led to people looking at japanese cars that were cheaper and they thought perhaps reliable. (Someone told me back then they weren't more reliable but their dealerships were better at fixing lemons and shutting up about it). Losing American mfg jobs, govt stepped in with incentives.
So Gerry, the "no national pride" started with the people, if you want to talk corruption D's are all over it, but yes perhaps Rs are responsible for focusing on profits.
