Just allow your sadness to manifest itself into blind rage towards a defenseless canine and I bet it will feel like old times again.

Sorry for your troubles. Solution: Get all done up...head downtown and throwdown...bring the guy home with you and prepare for the ensuing show!

That is very decent and typical of a conscionable human being. Move on...forget the dog...it's a dead relationship leash that needs to be cut.

I've found that, especially in this area, the more "attractive" a person is, the less substance they have. This applies to both genders.

Pretty people are used to having their asses kissed by insincere people, and after a while, one of two things happens: 1) they believe the bullshit, and become a shallow douchebag, or 2) become so desensitized that they don't recognize when someone's being genuine.

Fortunately, I'm a fairly ugly person, so I'll never have this problem. I have to earn whatever I get.

I wouldn't say you're GEICO cave man ugly, but whatever aesthetical shortcomings you may think you have, I'm sure you compensate with engaging personality.

You should not sell yourself short like that. Most people are fairly decent, interesting, and have plenty to offer the right person. It sounds like you have just met one too many schmucks. You should take a risk in your next relationship - don't go after the same shaved chest, CL posting tool bag types - branch out a bit and you might surprise yourself.

See, and that's my point; you'll take a ripped guy who needs the attention of other women on Craigslist over a guy who, by your own admission, would be perfect if only he were hotter. You put aesthetics over personality, and so did your boyfriend. This pattern will more than likely repeat itself over and over again until you change your priorities.

looks and attitude is the ticket

an attractive, desirable girl would choose a good looking total d-bag over a decent looking guy with a 10/10 personality.....any day of the week. Most will deny this of course

i've seen the show before

the girls judge the guys 90%+ based on the depth of their voice, and their height (which they are able to determine through touch).

nothing whatsover to do with personality or charm. all the show does is drive home generalizations about what truly attracts a woman to a man...... and it sure as hell aint none of that stupid personality BS.

Neat concept, but the entire premise is flawed. The producers won't choose anybody that's blatantly unattractive, so going in, these 6 know they're not going to get stuck with a total lemon. Maybe not the first girl they would have hit on, but their friends won't rag them about that dog they were dating on that TV show.

Serious question: what do people mean when they call somebody a "tool"?

I could look it up on urban dictionary, but I find that a dubious resource, sometimes helpful, but too many sketchy multiple definitions.

Well, thanks, but that's not particularly helpful.

Purpose vs. function: it seems like a distinction without a difference. An example would be helpful.

The word "tool" is obviously very derogatory. But to say someone "serves a function, not a purpose," how is that derogatory?

I broke down and looked it up on urban dictionary. Not surprisingly, the proferred definitions are at least as confusing as they are enlightening.

Thus:

1. One who lacks the mental capacity to know he is being used. A fool. A cretin. Characterized by low intelligence and/or self-steem.

Comment: How does that fit with the title of this thread, where the boyfriend seems to be the user (rather than being used), and not really a fool, as such (although he made a tactical blunder by using CL).

2. someone who tries too hard. a poser. one of those chic's who holds the sign saying "Carson Daly is Hot." the asstard who goes to a rock show because they heard one of the songs on the radio or mtv. or someone who insists on wearing velour sweat suits. Avril Lavigne.

Comment: This sort of makes sense -- I mean, I understand the kind of person being described here -- but I don't see how it fits the person described in the title of this thread.

-- In short, what did the OP mean when she called her boyfriend a "tool," rather than, I don't know, a jackass, a two-timer, a douchebag, whatever...?

think of it as the new form of jackass and moron pooled into a new name to identify folks who are too self-centered to realize how much of an asshole they are.

I don't know. She probably just uses it synonymously with the phrases you mentioned. You'll have to ask her.

Hmm... okay. That makes sense.

I realize slang is not necessarily logical (e.g., saying a pitcher's stuff is "filthy," i.e., very good), but I don't get how the word "tool" is applied to that kind of person.

I get "tool" as male organ, "tool" as dupe/stooge ("Bush was a tool of Rove and the Neocons"), but not "tool" in the sense used here.

Oh well, it's no biggie... just a little piece of popular culture I've been puzzled by the last year or so... probably a sign of advancing age/decrepitude.

Thanks to Mephisto and RV for their thoughts.

in my generation a 'tool' is another name for a dick

Okay. I guess when I see the word it seems to suggest more than just dick - there seems to be another layer of meaning -- such as, not merely a dick, but a phony. Perhaps "tool" is the 21st century equivalent of Salinger/Caulfield's "phony".

More data to add to the mix: http://www.fluther.com/disc/31542/what-is-a-tool/

The meaning of the word does seem to be somewhat in a state of flux, seeing the different ways people define it. Perhaps it has more of a fixed meaning for certain age groups - within the specific cultural mix/ephemera of that cohort - but loses its meaning to an extent outside that cohort.

It probably would have been better if Gwen had titled her thread "Is My Boyfriend a Worthless Piece of Shit Like Inkahootz".

Everyone would have understood instantly; no explanations required.

Seriously stoner, wtf is up with this stupid page spam you are doing now?

Just acting out? Or you lose your meds? Maybe a little over medication maybe? While you may have a hard-on for Gravis, do you need to spread your BS to all the threads you touch?

I've been puzzled about the word "douchebag" myself... I can certainly identify one, but I am unsure how the word came about. I've always considered it more of a humorous thing to call someone rather than an actual insult.

Do you think "douchebag" is synonymous with "tool" in the context it was used in this thread?

Sounds like the best definition. Be certain to submit it to Webster.

Your mistake is an obvious and oft repeated one, you simply started acting like your bf was your husband. Living with him? Sharing a house, and dog, and you're not committed to stay together? That's a recipe for disaster.

OR started 73 "outing" threads on here between dryer cycles.

That's a lotta laundry.

Who calls other people "Narcissists?"

I can't imagine someone rolling down their car window yelling, "Narcissist!!!!" at the top of their lungs. I think I would have to pull over and bitch slap them.

The bigger question is, why would you want to? The tool hasn't been identified, and you're a woman scorned.
