Chelsea Clinton’s husband used his access to the Clinton Foundation to recruit investors for his hedge fund, a newly-leaked email alleges.
The email is from Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta’s inbox and was released Sunday by Wikileaks. The email is the work of Doug Band, a former top aide to former President Bill Clinton who helped found the Clinton Global Initiative.
Band had a long-running feud with Chelsea Clinton over her efforts to investigate the inner workings of the Clinton Foundation, which apparently targeted Band’s alleged use of the foundation to bolster his consulting firm Teneo.
In an email sent Jan. 18, 2012, Band claimed the actual corruption was from Chelsea’s husband Marc Mezvinsky, whom he said was using the Clinton Foundation’s donor pool to recruit investors for his hedge fund. “Marc mez had an idea to put together a poker night for the foundation to raise money,” Band says. “His raising money for his own fund hasn’t been going well and he has cvc [Chelsea] making some calls for him to get mtgs with some clinton people.”
Band then explicitly accuses Mezvinsky of using the Clinton Foundation purely as a vehicle for his own business interests.
“Marc has invited several potential investors and a few current business ones to the poker night. I assume all are contributing to the foundation, which of course isn’t the point,” says Band. “What is the point is that he is doing precisely what he accused me of doing as the entire plan of his has been to use this for his business which he is.”
