"The FBI has opened a civil rights investigation into the vandalizing and burning of a black church in Mississippi. "Vote Trump" had been spray-painted on a wall.

Local authorities are still searching for the Trump-tard(s) responsible for the fire, which they have identified as an arson.

"When firefighters arrived at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church Tuesday night, they found it in flames, and the Vote Trump slogan written in silver spray paint on the outside wall of the church," Mark Rigsby of Mississippi Public Broadcasting reports.

"Greenville Mayor Errick Simmons calls this a hate crime — an attempt to frighten voters just days before the presidential election."

In the impoverished neighborhood around the damaged Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, some people said they doubted the fire was set by a white person or a supporter of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

“You’ve got black people who have lived in Greenville all their life who won’t come in here, so I know no white guy is going to come out here,” said Robert Brown, 45 years old, who is black and lives across railroad tracks from the church.

Kenneth Powell, 50, a carpenter, lives in a brick home next to the church and called authorities when he heard the fire alarm and then saw flames. He said he didn’t notice the Trump message until fire department officials told him about it. He said he didn’t see anyone near the church and doubted a white person or a Trump supporter came through the area to commit arson.

“People try to make things look bigger than they are, worse than they are,” he said. “How are you going to pick this church out of all the churches around here? Why would they come back up in here to do that?”

Dennis Williams, 55, sweeping his porch behind the church on the same block, said white people rarely come to the area and are immediately noticed. He said strongly doubted the fire was set by a Trump supporter or a white person.

GREENVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi authorities have made an arrest in the burning of an African-American church spray-painted with the words, “Vote Trump.”

Mississippi Department of Public Safety spokesman Warren Strain says Andrew McClinton of Leland, Mississippi, who is African-American, is charged with first-degree arson of a place of worship.

McClinton was arrested Wednesday. Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church in Greenville, Mississippi, was burned and vandalized Nov. 1, a week before the presidential election.

It was not immediately clear whether McClinton is represented by an attorney.

Greenville is a Mississippi River port city of about 32,100 people, and about 78 percent of its residents are African-American.

After the fire, Hopewell congregants began worshipping in a chapel at predominantly white First Baptist Church of Greenville.

Fire Chief Ruben Brown told The Associated Press the sanctuary of Hopewell M.B Church sustained heavy damage in the fire, while the kitchen and pastor’s office received water and smoke damage.

The words “Vote Trump” were also spray-painted on an outside wall of the church.
