Flight attendant suspended for not serving alcohol is now suing airline

DETROIT (AP) - A Muslim flight attendant has sued ExpressJet, accusing the airline of wrongly suspending her because she refused to serve alcohol to passengers.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations' Michigan chapter announced Tuesday it filed the lawsuit last week on behalf of Charee Stanley, a Detroit-based flight attendant for the airline headquartered in Atlanta.

The federal court case follows a discrimination complaint filed last year with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which dismissed it without determining whether the airline violated the law.

Stanley alleges ExpressJet didn't provide a reasonable religious accommodation and seeks back pay and other damages. She was placed on unpaid leave last summer.

ExpressJet said in a statement that it values diversity but cannot comment on specific personnel matters or ongoing litigation.

In a world where pharmacists are allowed to decide not to sell contraceptives and court clerks are allowed not to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples because it violates their religious beliefs, it makes sense that a flight attendant whose religion does not approve of alcohol should be allowed not to serve it. For the rest of us though, if you don't want to sell contraceptives, then don't become a pharmacist, if you don't want to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples don't work as court clerk, and if you don't want to serve alcohol you don't work in a bar or as a flight attendant.

A private pharmacy is not required to carry birth control. If they don't want to carry it (or anything else), they don't have to. Don't know what the agreement is with the chain pharmacies and their employees.

Practitioners can refuse to do abortions, and nurses and surgical techs can refuse to assist based on religious and ethical beliefs. They can't be fired for this.

Now the flight attendant knew that alcohol was going to be served to passengers and that their job was to serve passengers. This brings up a good point. Should it be in their contract that they are required to do it, or can the other flight attendants handle the requests?

And if same sex marriages are legal then yes you kind of have to do licenses for them whether you want to or not, unless it is written in the work contract that you can have somebody else issue the license. Interesting points.

Small regional airline. There is only a single flight attendant on the flights. There is no one else to handle this onboard.

There's a difference between murdering a baby and serving a drink. Sheesh, they let anyone on the internet these days.

How is she going to detonate the bomb if she's kept busy serving drinks?

What came first - the clerk or the queer? Isn’t there room for granddad somewhere in there?

one person thinks logically as pertaining to the law; another like an immature child. One person provides reason to be considered and/or debated; another stupid humor. Why so butthurt

We will see if the AKLU pursues kourt cases against this flight attendant as vigorously they did the Colorado bakers.
