If you read the article, it sounds like a meth-fueled ripoff.

Evidently Matthew Shepard was addicted to crystal meth and had dabbled in using heroin. He was also working as drug dealer and prostitute and knew Aaron McKinney, one of the men who robbed and murdered him. McKinney was also a drug dealer and prostitute.

Murders committed by people who are intoxicated are usually some of the worst as far as violence and savagery, because they lose their inhibitions.
