Trump's best chance as an Independent is to hang on in the GOP primaries as long as possible so he can inflict maximum destruction on the party. But, I think he's going to cakewalk the GOP nomination at this point and probably won't have to go that far.

Tens of millions of folks out in rural America absolutely love the guy.

The Republicans have 2,472 national delegates, including 155 from Texas. It’ll take 1,237 to win.

If those go to Cruz, Trump has a big problem. They could also go to Bush, whose family is influential in Texas.

Then there's Florida - Bush/Rubio turf. 99 delegates. Trump doesn't get those.

Will Trump go on an angry rampage? Will he bow out gracefully. Will he form a coalition with one of the other candidates?

I believe Texas does not have a winner take all system. Rather some delegates are allocated based on voting within individual districts while other delegates are allocated based on statewide totals. If no one candidate can pull close over 50%, the Texas delegation could be significantly fractured.

Most polls I've seen have Trump ahead in Florida. He may not be able to get more than 35% of the vote, but with multiple candidates that may be enough for him to win, and get all of Florida's delegates under their winner take all system.

Of course things could change depending on what happens in South Carolina and on Super Tuesday. However I think the Republican leadership needs to start accepting that Trump may be their nominee.
