In a bizarre scene, host Savannah Guthrie led into the segment saying that the "Today" show could not verify that they had won the Powerball, since the family had not yet contacted state lottery officials.
The caption on screen even put "winning ticket" in quotes.

Why reach out to the "Today" show and go public before cashing in the ticket?
"Well, actually, it was his idea," John Robinson said, pointing to his lawyer.
Lawyer Joe Townsend explained: "I think the American public wants to hear from them, and even though they want to be private after this is over, they want to let the American public know they're the winners."
Townsend wanted the Robinsons to call a national media outlet before cashing in their ticket to ensure that they could control their own story

It was reported the night of the drawing that the winning ticket was sold in California. Why would NBC put these people on the air as the "jackpot winners" if they're not from California and can't prove they were at the place in California at the date, time and place that the winning ticket was sold?

However, who the fuck is running Powerball? So, the night of the drawing, Powerball announces, "And, it's official...the winning ticket was sold in California!"

And then two days later, out of nowhere, two more winning tickets have shown up? How can the powerball system not definitively tell precisely how many winning tickets were sold, as well as when and where they were sold?

The California Lottery said that they had sold a winning ticket in California right after the drawing. Within several hours, Powerball said that in addition to that one, there were a couple more sold nationwide.

Tennessee, huh? That money is going to buy a LOT of meth.

$328M in one lump sum. The family is being interviewed right now. They actually seem really nice. Middle class family. I guess I would be nice too if I just won. I hope they don't destroy their lives and act nigger rich.

It was announced later the same night of the drawing that there were 3 winning tickets. California, Tennessee, and Florida. No mystery or deception.

I would think they would know instantly but with so many tickets sold who knows.

Wrong. After tax payout on each winning ticket is just over $187 mil. Still not bad for a $2 investment LOL

I heard there were three winners the morning after the drawing on the radio. I suppose once the numbers are published in whatever form, the "news" doesn't care enough to continue plastering the story.

That said, there are 44 states that sell Powerball tickets. And they work pretty much like our elections. Different states report at different times. There is no massive network that keeps them all tied together. As we've seen in past elections, every state works at it's own pace.

California was probably quick with the winner because it was only what...seven in the evening out there when the numbers were drawn?

Keep your fingers away from that families mouths.
