Obsolete
Posted by: Warhawk ()

I was cleaning out some junk in my basement this past weekend and came across a bunch of VHS tapes of stuff I'd taped on TV over the years. No longer owning a VCR, I trashed all of them, but it started me thinking:

Realistically, what common everyday things could potentially become obsolete in short order due to today's technology? Things that I experience today that my kids may never use in 5 years? I'm not a dumbass - I understand that eventually everything becomes obsolete even if you have some hangers-on that love their 8 tracks or you have some backwoods town that time forgot.

Here's two i can think of.:

Walk-in video rental stores (like Blockbuster) - due to Netflixx, Hulu, broadband, etc. I can't remember the last time I went into a place like that.
Road maps - due to ever evolving GPS units.

And I wouldn't be surprised if telephone companies become obsolete in the sense of having a home phone with long distance - considering that you can Skype over the internet and it costs nothing.

news papers are very old no need to hang on to them, why wait until tomorrow to read the news of today. radios, thanks to the internet and those darn ipods. and friends, thanks to this forum.

Blockbusters are already closing, and a Hollywood Video near me sold half its space to a restaurant. Netflix, broadband, gas prices and convenience all blended together to kick the brick-and-mortar rental stores out of relevance.

Manners and respect. Look at the way people address others on this forum. In real life people would either be too fearful or feel compelled to demonstrate a modicum of decency toward one another. With the incessant name calling and personal attacks in online forums, it is only a matter of time before human to human interaction follows suit.

I think the Forum is a nice outlet. I hate being fake with people, and that's what most people expect. I don't like chit, chat or small talk about bullshit. I would rather come on here a fuck with people and express what I really think. I think that is a positive, not a negative.

Shit, I forgot about them. I'm still a little old school with music, I'll buy CD's and then burn them to Itunes. I only buy mp3s here and there. My son and all of his friends don't own one single CD. Amazing.

I thought it was ghetto that I didn't have a house phone and only used a cell phone, but I just read that a lot more people are doing this, and also people are ditching wrist watches and using their cell phones as time pieces.

Also, for the past ten years, cell phones have pretty much killed pay phones.

They were obsolete before they were ever built.

If you go by the new DOT building, they have a "Transportation Walk." One of the items they feature is the Segway. WTF?

Can I still call them dwarves? Because if I ever become a multi-millionare, I'm going to walk around in public with a dwarf on a long black leash.

I'll give you the 911 thing (which also goes for cellphones), but there's something to be said for being able to get on Skype with a webcam and talk to somebody overseas or on the other side of the country for $0.00. I don't use Skype but my boss and neighbor do and they like it. Both have families in Eastern Europe.

Why Youtube? As long as people's cats can play the piano, there will always be Youtube.

All the good content is getting restricted by lawyers and YouTube can't net any income off of cats playing piano. Hulu and other sites that pay for content are going to overtake it at some point unless Google drastically changes the business model.

To add to this, futurists predict different races will be a thing of the past in less than a century. With inter-racial pregnancies on the rise, there will be no white, black, asian, hispanic, etc. The average human will have a light brown complexion with mixed facial features.

A few years ago there was a prediction that game consoles were going obsolete. PCs would be able to handle any new games that came out.
This of course was before the new generation of consoles came out.

yes, what they failed to recognize was that consoles are successful because they are standardized platforms.

What about those Laserdisc movies? IIRC, it was like a CD on roids.

I seem to remember an obscure game system from back in the early 90s called NEO GEO. Some kid in my neighborhood had one (retailed for a rediculous $600), then I remember about 2 years later, they went kaput.

Then there's the Tandy computer from Radio Shack...ugh.

Libraries are pretty obsolete. They should keep all the books in a single distribution center and take them to libraries when someone orders a specific book, kinda like netflix. Instead of books the libraries should simply be filled with computers for internet access.

yeah, the carts were really expensive, especially because some games required additional hardware which they would build into the cart. it was a true arcade platform.
