Shootout in Northern Paris in Police Raid Linked to Friday Terror Attack
-
Two persons are believed to have been killed in a shootout in a Paris suburb as special police forces launched an operation early on Wednesday linked to Friday's terror attack in which 129 people were killed.
Several police officers have been wounded in the shooting and three men have been detained, say sources.
A heavily armed special response unit raided an apartment in which suspects were believed to be holed up.
BFMTV and iTele both showed amateur video of the shootings and cited witnesses in the area saying they had heard sporadic gunfire since around 4:30 a.m.
'Deafening explosions' and shooting were heard from the area, said residents, many switched off all lights and hid. Traffic was blocked to the area where only helicopters, ambulances and police cars were visible.
The operation took place near the Stade de France soccer stadium where three suicide bombers detonated their explosive belts and killed a passerby.
Seven terrorists died in Friday's multiple attacks in Paris. Two are known to be on the run.
In claiming responsibility for the attacks, the Islamic State group said eight men were involved.
The police have stepped up a Europe-wide hunt for the Paris attackers after video confirmed that there may have been a ninth man.
The other attacker on the run has been identified as 26-year-old Salah Abdeslam, who carried out the shootings along with his suicide-bomber brother Brahim.
Earlier, two Air France flights en route to Paris from the United States were diverted because of security issues.
An Airbus A-380 that departed from Los Angeles landed in Salt Lake City, where passengers and crew were deplaned and transferred to the terminal.
A separate flight that left Dulles International Airport outside Washington was diverted to Halifax International Airport in Nova Scotia also because of an unspecified security concerts.
