Louvre and a Gothic Chapel Refuse to Schedule Israeli Students' Visit
Haretz reports that an investigation has been launched over suspicions of illegal discrimination by the Louvre and he medieval Gothic chapel of Sainte-Chapelle against a group of Tel Aviv University art-history students.
Last month, Sefy Hendler, who teaches in Tel Aviv University’s art history department, contacted the Louvre and Sainte-Chapelle to schedule visits there for the 12 students. Both institutions declined: Sainte-Chapelle responded that there was no space available on the date requested, and the Louvre refused to allow the visit on three requested dates.
“It surprised me that a place that receives nine million visitors a year didn’t find room for us,” Hendler said, referring to the Louvre, “even though we asked to tour in the middle of the week.”
Afterward, Hendler attempted to make similar arrangements on the same dates and times using the names of fictitious educational institutions from Italy and Abu Dhabi. This time both institutions told him that space was available. He reported the incident to the president of French Friends of TAU, the nonprofit organization funding the visits, who pursued the matter.
The administration of the Louvre responded that it was “disturbed” over the incident and initiated an internal investigation, but told French Friends of TAU that the museum's reservation system is almost entirely automated. By contrast, reservations for visits to Sainte-Chapelle are handled manually by staff. The administration of Sainte-Chapelle said that an internal investigation revealed "recurring irregularities," but it is unclear if the incident in question "constituted a case of discrimination due to their origins."
