RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A Richmond teenager has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading no contest to a charge of killing an 8-year-old boy.
Media outlets report that 17-year-old Mairese Washington entered the plea to second-degree murder in Richmond Circuit Court on Wednesday. He received a 40-year sentence with 10 years suspended.
Washington also was accused of assaulting the boy’s 12-year-old sister. In exchange for his plea, prosecutors dropped charges of malicious wounding and strangulation involving the girl.
Washington had been scheduled to stand trial in June.
The victim’s sister told authorities that Washington beat her brother and choked her on May 1, 2014. The children were playing along railroad tracks behind their home when the attack occurred.
