I would ride with friends from that marina to Tims about 25 miles down river for crabs and beer and back good times but there were people that had lots of trouble getting their boats back on because the ramp is so rough and has a bad drop off which was a hold up

Washington Sailing Marina is owned by the National Park Service?

The Washington Sailing Marina was built in a far away time and age of real white privilege for the exclusive use of yachtsmen. The George Washington Parkway was built in the early 1930's with the areas of public land adjacent designed to be parks and later National Airport . The Washington Sailing Marina or WSM is old, at the time it was built the population of the entire Washington DC metro area was less then 1 million people. Since the Pentagon Lagoon marina was built with the GW Parkways Humpback Bridge that marina became a marina for larger more expensive power boats which it still is today for well off people as sailboats can not get out or into the marina or up the Potomac river due to the lower bridges all though they were designed to turn or open to allow Navy ships access up to Georgetown

That white privilege scheme of the past was accepted in its day and age but the population of the DC metro area has exploded , Today the scheme is not accepted it is considered deplorable to discriminate against the American public ,there is no good excuse today for its existence .

Today there are at least 4 million people in the area. The demand for access points to enjoy the Potomac River that has been pointed out was cleaned up by the American people at great cost has vastly increased to allow the public access for 1. small power boats for pleasure fishing and other uses 2.small light human powered craft that can be rooftop carried on cars 3. Sailboats and larger power boats in that order

The facts are that the small power boats including jet skis where their noise does not impact wildlife and all human powered craft far outnumber the sailboats and larger power boats with regard to use on the Potomac River, where access points are few .

The National Park Service must stop the present existing scheme of favoring the sailboats and allow the small powered boats and human powered craft equally with sailboats at the WSM

If it means that two thirds of the sailboats must be displaced and removed from storage or docking , so be it . This discriminatory scheme has been in existence far to long and must cease immediately

This is a huge! Not long ago the government wanted to get rid of this very popular marina to turn it over to a group of bird watchers who came along far after the marina was built in by private owners in the early 1950s. The government wanted to fill in the marina area at a cost of 27 million which was granted ! That plan was turned down vastly by the public and the marina has stayed open , there are a pair of nesting American bald eagles just above in the trees overlooking the marinas boat mooring area , there are numerous birds and other wildlife there. If anything bothers the wildlife its the trash coming off the river from DC where people throw it down on the streets to be washed by rain into the Potomac , the noise from planes taking off and landing at National is always present day and night .

Never the less the government scaled down its plans and still built a multi million dollar stone wall with some other walls to nowhere down river to block the lower marsh from the natural effects of the river , a tremendous waste of tax money that could have gone to far better use to renovate the Belle Haven Marina and park next door with the amount that was spent !
