Dear Chief Eli,

How does this rule of thumb work? Who decided it? Is it scientifically measured and quantified?

Cary sent every member of the FU Archives a pm stating this rule.

I am prohibited by privacy and copyright law from reproducing that pm here, other than in general summary form.

Cary spent months developing this rule, which he believed properly balanced the community's needs with the spammer's needs. (Rest assured, Cary does not look down on spammers; he believes everyone is equal.)

When he had finally articulated a rule to his satisfaction, he then submitted it to Chuck Hoffman for quantitative analysis. Among other things, Chuck did extensive research on the practices of forums comparable to Fairfax Underground (unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your point of view, there are no forums comparable to Fairfax Underground).

To make a long story short, the rule is now officially in place.

Naturally, Cary will not enforce it. Especially if someone asks him to enforce it.

Unless he's annoyed. Then he will enforce it with great vigor; like the proverbial motherfucker.

So don't annoy him. Or me. Because I've got Cary's "ear".
