Are you old enough to remember 1976? That was the last time Americans stood together.

Americans celebrated the bicentennial in 1976 and we had our differences but we stood together. In this photo of July 4 1976 Americans form a human pyramid to raise the flag! What happened to us?

Reagan was elected, the myth that we were all in it together was irredeemably shattered, and Republicans started claiming ownership of America and its symbols.

Back then we were coming off the era of love for our brothers. Nam was done and people were tired of fighting. We all cared for one another and were focusing on healing the wounds suffered by civil rights conflicts and the war. The people in the photo were young and celebrating making the government do their bidding. No more war in Vietnam, gains in civil rights and the prosperity of the future. We were proud to be Americans and weren't so self centered that we felt a need to call our fellow citizens niggers or crackers. What the fuck is wrong with you people that makes you all so bigoted and hateful? All that hate is going to give you cancer and make your women cheat on you with a person of the opposite race. Then your dicks are going to fall off. Haters, both black and white, fuck you assholes. No one has time for you and no one cares about why you hate.

Career politicians, liberalism, attack on American values, morals and ethics, massive invasion of illegal aliens. Liberalism breeds hate.

That is a great post and is a clear answer to the OP's question. Thank you.

1976 was the year Charlie's Angels debuted with Farrah Fawcett and Kate Jackson.

Millions of boys were finally free to jack off without feeling any guilt and to discuss it openly with their friends.

Stupidity, narcissism, racism, self-indulgence, etc. You are the problem, asswipe. You’re nothing more than a liar and you contribute absolutely nothing to American Society.

Yes, what happened to us?

Well for starters, they banned school prayer under the guise of separation of church and state, which is no such thing. Then, when changed to a "moment of silence" to please some complainers, that was banned also as offensive. Someone might be "offended" by a moment of peace and quiet, apparently! Then they banned the pledge of allegiance in school as offensive, because somehow, that's offensive (nationalist, I guess). So anything deemed offensive by a small minority is banned, dividing the people. Must break people in small groups and form them under the "new all powerful state" as drones that obey all with no independent thought. You must be made to be the same and think the same.

Next, they attacked any form of ROTC or military recruitment in colleges under the guise of defense being warlike and not wanting that in colleges. After that, they levied Affirmative Action through the iron-fist of law, so they legally started to change from equal opportunity to equal outcomes at the expense of those who actually WORK to get ahead. They basically subsidized failure. They did the same when the "war on poverty" began, which has since paid out $22 Trillion in redistribution of income over the last 50 years and we still have massive inter-generational poverty and the largest inner-shitties have had democrat mayors for close to 50 years.

$22,000,000,000,000 is a shit-ton of money, by the way. The defense budget was only about $8,000,000,000,000 over the same time period.

Then, to make everyone feel more comfortable and capitalize on white guilt, in accordance with the "browning of America", it was decided we'll stop enforcing all the laws on immigration and just open the flood doors and let anything, anyone and everyone in, as long as they are from Central or South America. Everyone else has to follow the rules, except them. And for good measure, we'll make everything bi-lingual so the can balkanize the country against itself and ratchet up the hate and discontent.

We'll also take power away from the states and federalize every function, so no matter where you live, there will be no escape. You will do exactly what Washington DC wants you to do, no matter where you live.

Finally, we'll go to a 24 hour news cycle and stir the pot every 15 minutes with nothing but bad---> worse news.

BTW, it's not that easy to put back together once broken.

But hey, "we" simply MUST come together because a select few want free healthcare, reparations for slavery, and environmentalism... but not from their own pockets... no, the "rich", code-speak for "anyone but me...tax the other guy", must pay for that and anything else they may want from Uncle Sugar!

Today's white guilt: ain't it great!

I remember that 4th. I was a little kid. Our neighborhood had a parade. Not with big floats, but mainly marching band and drumming type stuff with some muscle cars. I marched with everyone and had a great time. I still check quarters for the drummer on the 1976 year coin and save them. I have a ton. I heard they are worth 30 cents instead of 25. Anyways, no cocksucker took a knee in 1776. We have raised a generation of retarded little snowflake crybabies. Even NFL players are complete pussies these days.

Snowflakes? The only snowflake I see here...is you. Coupla' brothers kneel in silence, which is their constitutional right and you come undone. A white guy kills 58 and injures over 500...and you say nothing. Your outrage...misplaced. Your values...unsound. Your patriotism...misguided.

Leftist.Gorilla is on record here of hating America. Wrote that he'll love it when it turns into something worth loving and wanted all conservatives dead. Just another typical liberal.

LMMFGDAO...you guys are so angry at the world you can't even quote someone.

By saying I wanted the conserva-cucks to get out of the way, I just meant that they would yield or lose politically so that my people can get things back on track.

At no time did I say or even suggest this would involve dead conserva-flakes. But hey...don't let me get in your way...if y'alls want to kill yo'selves, please don't spare another moment.

Back then, even liberals were normal. You could talk to a liberal and have a somewhat intelligent conversation with them. Democrats and Republicans could even be friends. WTH happened?

America liked doing the pyramid thing back in the 70s. See Eight is Enough.

I was born in 60 and lived in an upper class neighborhood with natural gas lit street lights that bordered on a lower middle class neighborhood populated by persons of color. It was NJ and we were about 15 miles from Newark, which was partially burned down in the riots. I was routinely attacked by said persons of color from age 7-12. I had 3 10 speeds stolen from my driveway, side yard and even inside my garage.

By 1976 things had in fact calmed down. Its hard to underestimate the impact of racial tensions and Vietnam during the 70's. Gas lines of the early 70's were gone. Fuck Nixon was out. The war was over, Jimmy was POTUS and it was before the hostage crisis.

So yea, actually it was a pretty good time between strife in our country. I celebrated by drinking my first case of beer and puking on my best friends dad in the car.

No more Nixon, no hiv but lots of sex, drugs, rock & roll.
And then, you little ungrateful shits started being born. Thank whomever, but a few of us kept our wits and realized the world would soon be overpopulated.

There was a resurgence of unity in the 1980s. Maybe it was not the same as 1976, I do not know. But there was an outpouring of compassion for the homeless and other causes.

People formed a human chain across America (there actually were gaps in the chain, though), there were countless rock concerts for charity.

It wasn't perfect, but can you even think of any unifying things these days? Burning Man? Please, take away the drugs and most people there wouldn't have made the trip.

Same ol' BS we have today, but you didn't have 2 or 3 generations you were concerned about...and probably you were high...

Don't judge the goodness of the people in this country based on this site or CNN...

Ford was president -
https://www.fordlibrarymuseum.gov/library/document/factbook/economy.htm

Carter came in 1977- and on his second day in office, Carter pardoned all evaders of the Vietnam War drafts. During Carter's term as president, two new cabinet-level departments, the Department of Energy and the Department of Education, were established. He established a national energy policy that included conservation, price control, and new technology. In foreign affairs, Carter pursued the Camp David Accords, the Panama Canal Treaties, the second round of Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT II), and the return of the Panama Canal Zone to Panama. On the economic front he confronted persistent "stagflation", a combination of high inflation, high unemployment and slow growth. The end of his presidential tenure was marked by the 1979–1981 Iran hostage crisis, the 1979 energy crisis, the Three Mile Island nuclear accident, and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. In response to the invasion, Carter ended détente, escalated the Cold War, and led the international boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.

I remember it. The Vietnam war had ended about a year prior to the bicentenial. I was just a kid but I remember how republicans treated the troops returning home. Republicans would spit on the troops and call them baby killers. A lot of our fighting men killed themselves because the republicans treated them so badly.

I bought a starter motor from Trak Auto for my 1972 Ford Maverick. It lasted two months and went bad Trak Auto gave me another one for free but it went bad in 6 weeks. I bought another one from Fairfax auto parts and it lasted the life of the vehicle.
