Swimming Hole/Park at the Western End of I-66
Posted by: Can'tRemember ()

In the early 2000's I drove with a group of friends out West (where I-66 ends) to a man made Swimming Hole. From what I can recall, it was made out of an old Rock Quarry and they had set up a beach there. There were also batting cages. In general, it was a very family friendly place. I've searched and searched for where this may have been, but can't seem to come up with anything...does this sound familiar to anyone? Thanks!

Ahh that sucks.

How is their fault if people drown?! People drown in oceans and lakes, I guess we should shut those down too.

Half Moon Beach in Strasburg closed in 2008 and has not reopened.

Looks like somebody drowning in 2008

STRASBURG -- Half Moon Beach is being sued for more than $24 million by the family of one of last summer's two drowning victims.

Sunday will mark the one-year anniversary of the drowning of Dakota Lee Hansen, 6, of Culpeper.

Her father, Edward Keith Hansen, the administrator of her estate, filed a lawsuit in Shenandoah County Circuit Court against Half Moon Beach Park Inc., Skyline Paintball, Strasburg Land LLC and Dunmore Land LLC in November.

On Tuesday, Richard D. and Stuart A. Bernstein, co-executors of the estate of Leo Bernstein, and Stanley W. Colton were added to the wrongful death suit, according to court records. Bernstein, who died last year, was president of Half Moon Beach, the filing says, Colton was secretary and both were directors.

Half Moon Beach, which featured swimming in the former quarry, did not reopen this summer.

In addition to Dakota's death, Nathaniel B. King, 26, of Marshall, drowned there July 16, 2008.

According to the lawsuit, Half Moon Beach and Skyline Paintball co-owned and co-operated Half Moon Beach Park, which was leased to them by Strasburg Land and Dunmore Land.

It says the defendants "negligently invited the general public to pay for the use of the Half Moon Beach Park amusement, recreation and swimming facility," but failed to post warning signs that would be intelligible to a 6-year-old.

The suit says Dakota was swimming in the quarry's shallow children's section, which dropped off 15-20 feet at the edge. It accuses the lifeguards of inadequacy.

That is the parents fault, If I had a 6 YEAR OLD, I would watch them like a hawk if they were swimming.

Yet again, a liberal ruins things for everyone else.

You let your kid go swimming and the kid drowns. That's the quarry's fault? I think almost everyone knows you can drown in water.

Wonder what the outcome of the lawsuit was?

PS- not a 6 year old on earth worth $24 mil.

This is so sad.. I use to go here in the summers as a child. Never had incidents then. Parents today should be held accountable for there children!! What a shame a great place for people to go around that area had to be closed down due to idiot outsiders that didn't watch there child. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but truth is that money will not bring back that child, but it does take away from pleasures that many people over the past 30 something years had enjoyed. Way to go.. SOMEONE should buy and REOPEN it!!!!

Yet again, conservatives ruin everything. Get people suckered into a good thing, make money off of it, and then fail to spend the money to take care of it. Thanks Obama.

Yep, you nailed it. Liberals will piss on anyone's parade. It's the liberal judges that even entertain this type of nonsense as a wrongful death lawsuit.

Liberals are scourge of this world

Quarries look like awesome places to swim but heavy metals in the water make it dangerous IMHO

P.S. There is an awesome abandoned rock quarry in Savage, MD near the Carmax that we used to swim too. Very deep (300 feet plus). You have to hike in about a mile and sneak in under the fence. There are cliffs up to about 60 ft high that you can jump from. We tied a 6 pack of beer bottles to a string an lowered it down about 50 ft or so once, came back the next day and had some very cold beer waiting. Good, clean fun. Be safe, and don't get caught.

Milford Mills near Baltimore used to be awesome as well, and open to the public, but I think it too has closed.

I know this is pretty old but i really have to put this out there...I was there in early 2000s when i was like 10 or so. I cant remember the year, but i was there when a kid drown. It was a little black kid (i say black cuz all i can remember is how purple he was and his brother crying) no older than 6. there was one life guard on duty and 4 life guards hanging out across the lake on a dock (pretty far, too far to year us yelling apparently). the life guard on duty was bobbing around in the corner by the rocks, we thought she was just cooling off or something, but then she comes up with a body...swims over..puts him on my towel..i remember freaking out as she walked with him towards me, and got up from my towel, then she put him down on it...i dont really remember what the life guard did next but people were screaming to the life guards over at the docks while the kids older brother stood there crying and screaming "thats my brother" over and over again, it was alot going on right next to me. next thing i remember we were walking back to the car and life guards were still hanging out on the docks. we just left. and i never heard anything again...never heard about it on the news...cant find anything now...it wasnt the girl in 2008..i just want to know what happened to that kid, did he die, where's his brother at now..

if anyone has any information on what happened that day please let me know at treyr227@gmail.com

Let their kid drown, then play the ghetto lottery and get some money. To bad about the business shutting down, or everyone losing their swimming hole.
