He has guts, like a guy said courage is something that comes from within. It takes more courage to perform a task that requires a strong personality when you have none. Some people might say it was "fool hardy", I doubt it, he had a plan, fool hardy people have no plans.

The south had slaves. The north did not. Slavery was abolished at the end of the war. That was a pretty big issue and consequence of the war.

A lot of the revisionist history started immediately after the civil war to reconcile the states. History has shown that freeing the slaves was not just a nuanced outcome of the war, it was a profound one.

The only thing I shake my head about Meade is elevating Lee to a personal hero of his. That doesn't jive. Lee knew about Slavery and separating families, mothers from babies, hobbling and castration , and he agrees to lead the rebels, absolutely unacceptable. His conscience should have directed him to abadom the rebel cause, and go with the humanity thing of abolishing slavery. Not a man of conscience that's for sure. Glad we are waking up! Lee is not the substance of hero.

The North treated their slaves a lot better than the South did, some Southers were just plain mean bastards, let's be honest. One of the casualties of the pre-Revolutionary War Boston Massacre was a Black slave (Crispus Attucks) and the North never forgot this great Patriot.

Accounts of General Custer's (very excellent and heroic) performance during the Battle of Gettysburg frequently reference his 'lunatic courage'. This courage bit him on the ass a few years later.
