Does it make more economic sense to just buy a plot of land and build your own home?

Iv'e been looking at buying a place of my own since I graduated and home prices in this area are obscene. I can't wrap my head around how anyone can justify to themselves paying these prices. I've been pondering whether it would make more sense to just buy a plot of land like in Loudoun and just having a house built for myself. Nothing fancy. Something along the lines of a small sustainable home like this.
