i worked for years in Blagoevich's neighborhood, which, likely everywhere else in Chicago, was highly segregated.

One has no idea what a kleptocracy Chicago and Illinois are due to the rotten political class in Illinois unless they have lived there. Two of the most powerful state legislators are millionaire lawyers who do property tax appeals. They are in league with the Cook County assessor, and make millions taking contingent and other fees from property owners to reduce tax assessments. This is required every three years, if you are lucky enough to have the resources to engage attorneys. Of course, since every household in Chicago owes 125,000 in present value just to pay the pension hole (for services performed in the past), and the state owes $250B in pension debt for state workers (their budget is $38B a year), well, taxes will still go up and up, especially as people are leaving the state in droves.

There are all sorts of tired political narratives over taxing the rich, and so on. But the math in Illinois is inescapable, as even confiscating all of the wealth of the rich wouldn't put but a dent in the overall liability. (Take away all of the wealth of the billionaires in Chicago, Pritzker included, and you only chip away at the problem by $20B - and note this is not a tax, but a taking of all of the wealth).

I actually think Rahm Emmanuel was competent, although disliked by many now. I can only wait for the narrative slinging apparatchik which will be the next mayor, whomever that may be. The city will be simply insolvent, and quickly so. Detroit with a much bigger downtown.
