I've got no problem with the argument that the schools should not pay them. The idea that the students should not be able to market themselves never made sense. How many non-athletes at Alabama are prohibited from having a side business while in school? How many STEM students are prohibited from doing research jobs on the side. The old NCAA policy exists solely to allow the schools to maximize their revenues.

So, back in the day, say the 80's/90's, a foreign college student, young, late teens/early 20's female, pretty, gets a non-work Visa to come to the US, does a nude lesbian modeling gig under the table, gets paid for it, flies home, pays her tuition, and keeps going to college.

The NCAA position is that they, under their rules, not US law, the college this foreign college chick went to deserves a cut of that lesbian model's money because she was also on the inter-collegiate mail order whores who lie on their resume so they can get into the US, marry a rich shitbag, have an anchor baby, and chain migration parents, and live in Government housing on Pennsylvania Avenue in DC.

The funny part is, Trump & co. had lied about Melania’s degree for years.

Before 2016, “she” claimed to have gotten a degree from “University in Slovenia”. That school doesn’t even exist, nor does “University OF Slovenia”, in case “she” made a misspelling. I use quotes on “she” because it’s likely Trump had her lie about all of this on her website.

When the press started to question it around the time of the convention, her website was quietly taken down, redirecting traffic to her page on the Trump Org domain, which mysteriously made no mention of her degree or non-existent alma mater.

Then a story was planted that what she really meant was the University of Ljubljana and dropped out to pursue modeling after her first year. But when reporters looked into this claim, they found no records of her ever attending that school.

Since then they’ve avoided any questions, calling it, oddly, “fake news”.

The problem with allowing a college athlete to accept "outside" income, whether it is for a job, or selling autographs, or having a monetized YouTube channel, is that it would allow for all kinds of problems during recruiting.

Basically, if a player is allowed "outside income", rich alum can say...hey, sign with us, I'll pay you $100K for your autograph...or to have you water my lawn over the summer...or to have a website...whatever.

Would be no way to separate legitimate income, versus bogus income.

Bad for the players, bad for the sport.

OK, pay them. But regulate...kind of the way they are now paid.

On the other hand, though, is it not enough that not only do players get into schools they wouldn't have based on their grades, they get that school paid for?

That is the system. Don't like it? Don't play. Get into school as a regular student, and pay for it.

Those recent cases of parents paying to sneak their kids into school via the athletic department answers that.

The argument about "preserving the integrity of ameteur athletics" holds no water when the only thing ameteur about many of these big name big sports programs is that the players don't get paid.

It is true that being on a team allows some athletes to get into schools they might not otherwise be admitted to, and that is an additional value. That is not true of all student atheletes of those in demand schools. Further, once they get there those student atheletes in major sports don't get the same quality education as non-atheletes.

Right. Not every school is Notre Dame or USC. University of Alabama has a 53% acceptance rate and about a third of the kids who start there don't graduate. Basketball powerhouse University of Kentucky admits 90%+ and two kids in five won't graduate. Compared to these Clemson is an academic powerhouse with a 50% acceptance rate and 80% graduation rate.

Those are overall rates. Look at the major athletic programs specifically and very few of those kids would be there otherwise. And the only reason that any have reasonable graduation rates is that they're in BS majors and have babysitters.
