There were already maps showing North America before Columbus. Piri Reis created maps which were copies of older maps. Although it was before Al Gore invented the Internet, people weren't as isolated and uninformed as is generally believed. Fishermen had probably seen North American and possibly even landed. The Viking settlements were known about, and the Vatican has records from monks which mention settlements.
Many of the so-called "indigenous peoples" living in North America at the time of Columbus had themselves displaced earlier inhabitants of the continent.
