Here are the voter turnout stats for past elections back to 1972.
The 2016 turnout is actually the 3rd highest in this period.
2016 55.7%
2012 54.9%
2008 58.2%
2004 56.7%
2000 51.2%
1996 49.0%
1992 55.2%
1988 50.2%
1984 53.3%
1980 52.6%
1976 53.5%
1972 55.2%
Haven't you realized yet the fluke factor of Obama's 2008 victory? People were desperate because of the financial crisis and tired of the Iraq War. Obama promised so much but delivered so little.
You have to realize that many of the people who you may consider loyal Democrat voters from 2008 were actually throwing a Hail Mary. Many of these voters stayed home in 2012, but came back in 2016 and elected you-know-who...
Joe Biden, Kamala Harris or Pete Buttigeig are not going to bring the masses to the polls. They are boring and mainstream. Plus the economy is good.
And know this. Trump's favorability isn't great, but it's remained very stable. Trump's base still loves him and will get out and vote for him again.
