Note that early on there were standards (and few of them), and Universal Remotes did infact work.

Clinton's FCC also allowed counties to sign "local monopoly contracts" with cable television providers, allowing them to get away with really anything, charge really anything: AND BLOCK COMPETITORS from inside their "IT HOLE" they guard with police (bit blocking - it's illegal).

BE AWARE: asian companies "redact" codes for USA made TV

Scientific American / Cisco boxes: may be made in USA.

Other boxes: may be made in asia. asians don't "feel the need" to give out codes that would work with non-asian TV. asians cheat. "universal" isn't in their vocabulary. "strong arm tactics" is.

(Westing House is the finest LED, LED flatscreens is their invention not asian, and they still are competitive in the market with the latest/best technology).
