Verizon Wireless Shut Down of Older Network for Calls Dec 31 2019

Some information found and taken from a tech forum post.

* Verizon Wireless confirmed shutting down older 1X/CDMA network for calls December 31, 2019 or soon afterwards. Tech media news reports from last year plus on reddit, plus recently confirmed with VZW tech support. Any VZW phone that shows a 1x on the status bar instead of 4G during phone calls are affected.

* Older flip phones without a 4G band will stop working altogether. Hopefully VZW will put a notice in customer bills at least two months before, so these customers have a chance to replace these ones with one having 4G.

* Any 4G smartphone with a 1x band, where using 1x for calls is 98-99% reliable for incoming calls (unless cell service is one signal bar or below) will be forced to use the 4G band for both data/internet and voice. In a weaker 4G signal area with one to two signal bars, this can result in some incoming calls not ringing through (only say 85% ring through) as the 4G signal is shared with internet data on your smartphone, unlike if you use the older 1X to be retired network for calls. This can also be measured by the phone's dba signal strength found in an Android phones Google Settings (generally the higher the 4G dba number up to 140, the worse the signal).

If you need incoming calls to ring through 98-99% reliably and your home, small office, etc. are in a such weaker signal and already experiencing problems say in your basement, some options which may or may not work for you.

* VZW 4G LTE network extender https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/4g-lte-network-extender-faqs/ with Accessories link here. This extender does not work with all 4G phones. Within the accessories list, when open the Samsung one for $250 and there is a phone compatibility link. Although the extender allows 14 phone calls at the same time, it just needs to be near a window for a a good GPS signal (use Google app GPS Status to check) and a broadband internet connection (except satellite, wifi not required). It also requires at/around 1 signal bar of strength of cell service outside improving it 5 bars inside your home, but the extender will not work if the cable or power goes out, and there is no security on it to restrict it to certain phone numbers. Though can set a password, but if hacked, this kind of security lacking allows anyone walking by say your apartment building to use your signal/internet.

* Signal booster such as by https://www.weboost.com/products/connect-home-4g , but it requires an outdoor roof antenna, still needs minimal cell signal around 1 bar and is $400. May work for a house or townhouse, but not good in an apartment building or condo where the landlord or association will not allow you to place an antenna on the building roof.

* Wifi calling. You need a wifi router with its own set of security concerns. Though wifi is reasonably secure with a password, any security expert will tell you a wired router is better where someone to hack it would need physical access to your jack/port.

* Change cell phone carrier for better 4G coverage. AT&T's coverage is close to VZW, just different coverage holes. Sprint and T-Mobile may work depending on where you use your phone most, but their networks are smaller. If needed, AT&T, unlike VZW, has a microcell network extender https://www.att.com/att/microcell/ which you as the consumer can set up a restricted mobile phone list. On Amazon, multiple sellers sell it for $475-500. If change carriers, which if you have an unlocked 4G GSM phone (generally you paid full retail and not in a 2-year contract) and not stolen, most often, but not always, you can port your phone number and bring your own existing device to the new carrier. This is unlike the old days.

* Another option through Cox if you are a customer, if want to leave your existing wired router intact for laptop/PC data security or other purposes, can set up a separate cable modem with a wifi modem on a separate cable outlet. If not have a spare outlet, can use the one for your TV, get a Y-splitter and coax cable from Best Buy, etc. (under $25) and spend around $75 each for another cable modem and a Wifi router. If you already have Internet service with Cox, they will charge you another $40-45 monthly for a basic 10mbps connection. Could also plug the wifi router in your existing wired router, avoiding the monthly charge, but the instructions to do are quite complicated and can introduce security issues if not done right through this linked set up.

* Other options. Cox economy landline for better phone reliability $15, but with taxes, surcharges, expect around $20-25 monthly. Or move home to a better 4G signal area, or hope Verizon Wireless will improve cell coverage in your neck of the wood soon.

Otherwise, if none of the options above work for you as a VZW customer losing 1x/CDMA coverage, call Verizon Wireless tech support 1-800-922-0204 and let them know how you are negatively affected if they take down the older 1x/CDMA coverage by around year around. An open ticket recently opened is #6004902938. More customers complain and risk of them losing customers, the more likely they will escalate and take action.

FAKE NEWS. fake and felonious product. I BOUGHT ONE INSTALLED ON ROOF. RETURNED IT THE NEXT DAY. it added 1 bar to cell but the 1 bar was WHITE NOISE, meaning if i walked into the house the signal died in the exact same place.

* Wifi calling. You need a wifi router with its own set of security concerns.

their is no such product for sale or ever made a consumer can get their hands on, and they know it

* Cox economy landline for better phone reliability $15

COX IS NOT A 'SECURE' telephone company. they are a "phone over internet" company, and the calls are NOT secure

Could also be someone in a Fairfax County apartment community, where the landlord only allowed Cox to come in to wire, and not Verizon FIOS. Personally the last Fairfax County apartment community I lived in only had Cox and not FIOS.

1X/CDMA (2G) was introduced in 1991/1992, over 25 years ago.

It's time to move on.

My Cox landline was out from 0120-2305 yesterday. That's pretty fucking reliable!!! And because of the lovely thing known as a "bundle", I had no cable and intermittent internet.
