If Contact W Russia OK Why Did Smart People Commit Felonies to Hide?

Cohen is a lawyer - he knew the implications of lying to FBI. Same with Flyn - he was an expert in security. Manafort is a Felon on fraud so I understand why he lied - he had no choice. But if Russia contacts are a-ok why would informed people commit a felony to hide it?
