GM to lay off 15 percent of salaried workers, halt production at five plants in U.S. and Canada

Continued declines of new car purchases have troubled auto companies, especially as they grapple with technology that may reshape the industry and brace for the impact of the Trump administration’s trade dispute.

When President Trump announced tariffs last summer, Detroit’s Big Three automakers — GM, Ford and Fiat Chrysler — all trimmed their profit forecasts for the rest of the year, citing the rising commodity costs that would lead to hikes in prices and manufacturing costs. GM took a hard stance, warning of the fallout within the auto industry and saying that the tariffs risked “undermining GM’s competitiveness against foreign auto producers by erecting broad brush trade barriers that increase our global costs” in comments filed with the Commerce Department in June.

Forget the spin. GM, like other corporations, is tightening its belt in expectation of an economic slowdown. Similar fears are reflected in the stock market. Deloitte has forecast an increased probability of recession by 2020 with GDP growth of just 0.7%, due largely to uncertainty created by Trump's trade wars and disruption of supply chains.

His steel and aluminum tariffs have raised manufacturing costs for all U.S. automakers, with GM reporting $300 million in increased commodity costs for just one quarter. As a result, stocks of GM, Ford and Fiat Chrysler have all fallen by as much as 11%. Are we tired of winning yet?

His lack of experience in foreign policy and economics will be ruinous to our country for decades.

Perhaps the death knell for the Youngstown area. Lordstown is the remaining industrial anchor. This part of Ohio and America is symbolic of the loss of the ability to support a family. The Cruze hatchback is already made on Mexico. No amount of phony Trump rhetoric will save this situation. I am sure there will be a bait and switch magic act much like the supposed jobs he "saved" for Carrier workers in Indianapolis. The union says it had 1,200 members at the Carrier plant. Trump claims to have struck a deal that saved 1,100.

In May of last year, Carrier announced that it would lay off 632 factory workers, and continue layoffs until approximately 800 workers remained. Carrier told Popular Mechanics that 300 workers were laid off from the Indianapolis plant in July 2017, followed by 215 more in January 2018. One union leader says that 675 workers survived the layoffs. Another says 720 did. But 1,200 total jobs minus 720 jobs saved is 480 jobs lost.

Meanwhile, Robert James says 594 union members lost their jobs at Carrier. And we know that there were 738 layoffs at UTEC in Huntington. Our best tally is this: At the Indianapolis Carrier factory, it appears that 594 union workers were laid off and about 700 remain. Which adds up to nearly 1,300. That discrepancy between that and the original figure of 1,200 union members may lie in the number of transitional employees who were brought in and subsequently laid off. So much for "winning."

As the GOP-Trump-Trickle-Down-Tax-Fraud-Sugar-High wears off, look for longer unemployment lines in a local theater near you. Perhaps it would have made a million times more sense to invest a trillion or two in infrastructure and healthcare for the American people instead of investing a trillion or two in the 0.1%. There are no worse economics than 0.1% bladder-relief economics.

Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan went for Trump in 2016, they deserve to bear the brunt of this foolishness. I don’t like to hear of other people losing their jobs but at least it’s people who were dumb enough to elect this clown.

Donald Trump is a loser. We have a loser president running our country into the ground. People who voted for him deserve to be hit the hardest.

Trump should use tariffs on imported GM vehicles to subsidize foreign auto makers relocating production to Ohio. Americans would then get a better vehicle made in the USA by American workers.

In other words Detroit is tits up in debt despite OBAMA steering $1,000,000,000 Military dollars to criminals.

The workers are on strike an CEO, who during Clinton raided the retirement funds, are unwilling to deal with them anymore.

INSTEAD: THEY ARE SELLING OUT A PEICE OF USA AND RAISING GOVERNMENT WAGES

GM, other than cars, manufactures many if not most of USA's Emergency Vehicles: ambulances, firetrucks, etc.

CHINA, Germany, et al WOULD SINK SHIPS TO GET THOSE CONTRACTS.

hopefully they are canceling GM's "small cars" and making way for new "made in USA" cars. All of GM's "eco cars" no longer contain any "made in USA" parts, and the motors are from small asian countries.

A ten percent tariff on every GM car imported given as a ten percent subsidy on every foreign car produced in the US would end this nonsense overnight.

This should be expected. As I have said all along. Republicans ruin the US economy on purpose. Trump took a perfectly good product economy and ran it into the ground.

You'll see jobs go away, industries crumble and the markets crash. Same shit as Bush.

Democrats are reporting "it's a halt of production for re-working".

GOP knows they are lying, they are delaying the public, and are outsourcing.

YOU DON'T ANNOUNCE A PRODUCTION HALT FOR RE-WORKING (NEW MODEL) WITHOUT ANNOUNCING THE NEW MODEL

for example: Ford announced closure of the factories making "white vans" which included Ford's own smelting of metal: but Ford announced the facility had grown too old and a NEW FORD VAN was announced - which btw was on the road not a few years after the closure announcement

GM has not come forward with any NEWS of re-modeling because there isn't any - is my edumacated guess.

GM small cars (%100 asian assy in usa by minorities suing GM, btw) were a pain to work on - DiY forums didn't like 'em.

USA cars (esp chevy) used to be the "working man's car" and built to be hand wrenched. Parts were (WERE) 1/2 the price of parts for imports (and made in usa of course - Clinton / Obama saying usa can't make cheap shit is %100 lies).

One famous ANTI-DIY move by GM, thoughless and calous, was a batter replacment that required removal of a tire. they cheaped out so badly it was just ... un-operable by those that "had to maintain it". Another: shorted wires - wire harnesses thick with un-necessary bullshit and cutting them so short the wires were pulling themselves out already right off the factory floor: to save a few cents per car on wire making DiY more hellish again and ownership more costly.

Another: huge investment in Information Technology people didn't want and forcing these into base models so people were forced to pay for it (I PREDICT THIS WILL CAUSE JAPAN SALES TO FALL IF FORD MAKES "IT" OPTIONAL at sale). people have iphone they don't need to pay an extra few thousand for obama regulations and IT their iPhone can crush. they don't need a car that understands their phone either: they need the car to get them places with a passenger and their iphone in their purse where they want it.

ALLOT of GM mistakes. OR WERE THEY MISTAKES? you have to imagine Detroit is corrupt and GM is in detroit. it's all DNC Democrats. they are just as likely back door deals with asia a few profited from - not "mistakes" at all.

RAISES AND SEVERANCE FOR CEO'S THAT OUTSOURCED GM PLANTS

why those people up north are so strongly democrat when democrats continually double dip and "don't share" and ruin their kids future is beyond me

they are strong headed, that's for sure

and how about that support for illegal aliens in GM democrat area? illegal aliens buy only toyota.
