What do a former Aerosmith guitarist and a Massachusetts construction magnate have to do with Scott Israel's surprise win over incumbent Al Lamberti for Broward Sheriff? A lot, as it turns out.
Israel was trailing badly in the race, by 18 points according to his campaign's internal polling, in early October. It looked as if Israel, a Democrat and former Fort Lauderdale cop who lost to Lamberti in 2008, would take another bi-partisan whipping.
But then came a late infusion of attack ad cash that carved up Lamberti and fueled Israel's 53-to-47 percent win, a turnabout so stunning that Lamberti hardly knows what hit him.
"I'm still mystified," Lamberti wrote me in a text last week. "I can't figure it out."
Turns out the rocker and the rich guy — along with a shrewd campaign that hit Republican Lamberti in all his weak spots — changed everything. The rocker: Richie Supa, a guitarist and songwriter who once played with Aerosmith and now lives in Plantation. The rich guy: Robert Pereira, the founder of Mass.-based construction giant Middlesex Corp., who has a $10 million mansion on Hillsboro Mile and gave $245,000 to groups supporting Israel.
Supa, a friend of both Israel and Pereira, acted as a liaison and arranged a meeting on Oct. 18. They hit it off. That night, Pereira attended an Israel fundraiser where Supa performed at Big Dawgs, a smoke-filled bar in Davie. Pereira agreed to fund groups that would help Israel, according to Israel campaign manager Amy Rose and strategist Ron Gunzburger.
What's Pereira's motivation? I left him a message but didn't hear back. His company has Orlando subsidiaries for road paving and asphalt manufacturing. Gunzburger said there's no business or contract angle for Pereira with BSO. Israel, who takes office in January, concurred, calling Pereira "a friend."
