The only time I remember a black person saying anything about it was when I was in Grad school at UMASS Amherst. It was late on a Thurs. aft. and I was at the bar in the Blue Wall having a beer before I went to get the 5 College bus. This black girl, dressed in the "Liberation" garb of the era for black people was on the stool next to me. The song came on the audio. To me, it was background noise, but I guess she heard it. I don't know. Anyhow, I had a full thick head of long hair back then and she suddenly turned to me and asked me if she could touch my hair. I said "yes". She touched it, started running her fingers through it and asked me about the song. I told her I wasn't paying much attention to it, it was background noise to me. She asked me if I'd ever tasted brown sugar. I told her I had. She said "No, I mean REAL brown sugar". I told her I'd tasted that, too. Then she asked me if I liked it. I told her I did. So she asked me if I wanted to taste some more. I did and I did. She lived pretty close to where the 5 College bus let me off, so we got on it and went to her apt. We got done in the wee hours. She told me not to get any ideas, she just liked to have a white boy every now and then because we were a lot better at oral than "the brothers". I used to see her here and there around campus. We'd smile that knowing smile at each other. We hooked up one more time after that. I haven't seen her since I finished school there, though.
