The "Appamattox" confederate statue in old town Alexandria should be next to go

It has no place in our community, and should be dismantled immediately. A group of us is going there in 30 minutes to try to dislodge it. No more hate, no more bigotry!

It should be a town event. Have some bands and beers. Then aim a bunch of cannons at the statue to shred it into pieces.

We should dig that shit up, and replace it with one of the honorable General Sherman. I remember hearing stories as a kid about his march to the sea, or as one of my uncles called it "the great American barbecue tour". Every home and farm belonging to those traitorous sacks of shit down south was torched, and justifiably so.

Remember the last time Libtards tried to give us advice about politics then ended up stealing the election and sold our country to China? Yeah, no thanks morons.

There is also a plaque outside the old Hotel Monaco which has since changed ownership and names. The plaque, placed by the Sons of the Confederacy, memorializes the night a Union soldier went up to the roof and cut down the Rebel flag of hate. The soldier was then shot by the hotel's owner who was a sympathizer of the dirty, filthy, slaving, traitorous redneck hillbillies who would go on to become losers. The plaque leaves out the fact that after Jackson, the hotel owner shot Ellsworth, Lincoln's personal assistant...uh yeah...Jackson got smoked right then and there in the street, bled out in the gutter like a turd by the Union troops accompanying Ellsworth.

Appamattox is no where near Alexandria, and Alexandria was a Union city throughout the war. There's no reason for it to even be there. Put it on a truck and take it down to Southside. i'm guessing some "lost cause" sympathizer group put it there anyway as a tourist attraction.

I'm not sure how the statue got its name, but it marks the spot where militia loyal to the confederacy mustered to fight federal troops coming in to secure the area. Never mind that the area never was in the possession of the south. People argue that because Robert E Lee lived old town in what I believe today is called the Athenaeum, there's some connection there.

And we got the last laugh, because then Lincoln was smoked at Ford's theatre.

Uh, Alexandria was occupied by the Union army for the duration of the war, but was hardly a bastion of Yankee sympathy. Anything but! The statue is called "Appomattox" and commemorates the confederate soldiers from the city of Alexandria killed in what my grandmother variously referred to as "the War of Northern Aggression" or "that most recent unpleasantness".

My personal preference is that we encourage Sonny Jurgenson to get all liquored up one more time at the Dancing Crab in NW Washington (just as he did when he did color for channel 9, open it again just for the occasion) and let him smack hard into the status on his way home to Villa May. He's done this at least two times before, but the statue was always repairable. Third time's a charm.

What if it represents part of our Hispanic heritage?

Besides serving in the "Benavides Regiment", many Hispanics who were from Texas served in other units of the Confederate Army. Known as Tejanos, they fought in the Battles of Gaines' Mill, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, and Appomattox Court House as members of the Sixth and Eighth Texas Infantry and of Hood's Texas Brigade under the command of Col. John Bell Hood. Some Tejanos marched across the deserts of West Texas to secure the Mesilla Valley as members of Charles L. Pyron's company which were later incorporated into Gen. Henry Hopkins Sibley's Confederate Army of New Mexico and fought at the battle of Valverde.

The Athenaeum is located at 201 Prince Street in Alexandria. Lee's boyhood home is at 607 Oronoco Street. I was a docent there one summer when I was home from college in the 70s. Beautiful place, worth a visit. And if you believe in such things, quite haunted.

The statue is called "Appomattox" because it depicts a confederate soldier (rebel, secesh, butternut, greyback, johnny, whatever) contemplating the surrender of the CSA at Appomattox courthouse.

I read the Wikipedia entry on the Athenaeum, it doesn't say anything about Robert E. Lee living there. It was a bank and he may have had a bank account there.

Yule also kindly notice that the ahhhhh..."gentleman" depicted in the statue is facing with his back to the North. This placement was no accident.

Lee did not get down on his knees during the surrender, that's ridiculous. Grant would have NEVER asked him to do something like that.

Lee surrendered his armies, commanded his troops to lay down their arms, and then they got their paroles and went home.

Some Union soldiers actually captured Lee after Gettysburg, and brought him before Gen. Meade. Lee did, in fact, beg for mercy. Meade ordered his men to relase Lee and send him on his way.

After Lee had skedaddled, Meade slapped the captain who had captured him, and snarled, 'You moron! I said capture LONGSTREET! That man knows how to fight! He is worth twenty divisions to the enemy. As long as Lee continues to mislead the Confederate Army, Lee is worth twenty divisions to US!'

Later, if I am in the mood, I will tell you the story of how Confederate Colonel Harlan Sanders (not the one you've heard of, but his grandfather) convinced a panicked Lee not to surrender his army to McClellan at Antietam.

Famous quote from Harlan Sanders Sr: "Good God, man! Stand and fight! I will stand with you, sir! You can defy McClellan! I could carve a better general than that scoundrel out of a banana! What will you think of yourself tomorrow, sir?!?"

That quote was once well known to, and routinely recited by, all American school children. At the behest of the Dole Fruit Company, it was removed from history books circa 1930, as they did NOT appreciate the disparaging reference to their flagship product, the banana.

Cool! A history buff! 'Battle of Bullshit Run' is precisely what the press called the first battle - the one where yankee civilianw packed picnic lunches to go watch
the novice union army round up the miscreant rebs and end the rebellion in one day. At least, this is what the Union generals had promised - believe me, the northern journalists were waxing quite profane as they fled north, with the skedaddling yank soldiers right behind them. This profanity worked its way inot their stories.

During the more conservative 1880s, the battle's name was of course bowdlerized. Im pleased to meet another poster who knows of these things!

two things to consider ...

miami-beach-florida-north-bay-road-capta

#1 how will your kids function in a society where their country's history is paper-back books printed in china and nothing is made in usa?

terracotta_clay_warriors.jpg

#2 the politicians provoking death of america, school spending, imports, and other evils as well as politically correct statues? they are doing the opposite.

infact democrats in USA are STILL horking $$$ for maintaining history and doing archaeological digs to "preserve history"

CLAW BACK

its' just as Mit Romney said (keep in mind Mit did some off-shoring himself, and has mexican family ties and business ties)

"OBAMA IS THROWING RACE CARDS"

today's democrats are all about violence and race war - it is the sole purpose of their party to make all USA jobs gov jobs that are decided by foreigners / people who have no right to even be in the country ... giving each other jobs

it's not only about making USA politics all about race: its' about the immense counterfeiting war, of governments over-printing their actual value, that obama is into: he's using it to destroy USA industry for some kickbacks for blacks in the usa
