But when the driver mashes the accelerator, the car’s computer dials in “pursuit mode,” firing up the gas engine and reconfiguring vehicle systems to deliver maximum performance. Engineers retuned the regenerative braking to aggressively charge the battery whenever the vehicle slows, so that there’s always some charge left for the next acceleration boost.

Sounds like the BMW Active Hybrid 3. Nothing new.

The Active Hybrid 3 though is a twin turbo 6 cylinder with 300 hp with another 55 hp electric motor on top and a battery pack.

Car runs a 13.5 quarter mile. Has to be faster than this 2.0. Also does 0-60 with electric motor alone unless you pedal the combustion engine into action.

So odds are the Germans have probably tested and seen the benefits of this technology for 3 or 4 years now and American police want something similar.
