Most, if not all, of the "outrage" around Obama's election was largely based on media hype and directed toward phony things like his birth certificate, death panels, and secret muslims. In other words, people acting stupid.

The real answer, Op is that not a soul in the US thought a community organizer that ran on the platform of "But Boooooooooooooooooosh) could possibly do as much damage to this country as he ultimately did.
He promised to right the wrongs of the previous administration and lift all people.
