Second-degree murder charges were authorized Thursday against a Michigan man suspected of plowing through nine cyclists two days ago, killing five.

Charles E. Pickett, 50, of Battle Creek, Mich., faces five counts of second-degree murder and four counts of reckless driving causing serious impairment in connection with the crash on a two-lane road in Cooper Township, north of Kalamazoo, Mich. District Judge Haenicke authorized the charges at the request of Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting.

WWMT-TT went to Pickett’s home for comment on Wednesday, but said the family threatened to chase a reporter and cameraman off their property with a front end loader and then pursued the news crew in a car after the verbal altercation.

Pickett’s Facebook page sheds little light on him. It is filled with angry posts, sexual jokes and references to drinking.

He wrote in a May 30 post, “Pissed because people only care about their bullsh*t . and of course when sh*t gets tough the feed ya to the wolves.”

Christ almighty, some of the bicyclist were in their 70's!


Five of the bicyclists were pronounced dead at the scene: Tony Nelson, 73, and Larry Paulik, 74, both of Kalamazoo, and Debra Bradley, 53, Melissa Fevig-Hughes, 42, and Suzanne Sippel, 56, all of Augusta.

Three of the bicyclists who were injured -- Paul Gobble, 47, Sheila Jeske, 53, and Paul Runnels, 65, all of Richland, were hospitalized in serious condition Wednesday. Jennifer Johnson, 40, of Kalamazoo, who was leading the ride, was hospitalized in fair condition.

I was riding yesterday and people are so mad. I stay off paved roads as much as possible riding trails or gravel roads. Sometimes though you need to use a paved roads. People fly by 1 foot away as if to impress or scare the rider. Many pull way over to give plenty of room but the others are just so angry. I have not idea why. They are in a car, even if they slow down for 100 yards they can hit the gas and make up the time.
