Sesame Street kid here, checking in...
It's hard to know where to choose sides on this. This is a bit like Cash for Clunkers a few weeks ago. Basically, YouTube and streaming have destroyed PBS and Sesame Street. Kids don't want the show over the air anymore. I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old and they watch occasionally over the air, but they're into other non-TV activities.
PBS and Sesame Street have said that things are so dire there and donations are down to an all time low that without this HBO deal, they would have to shut down. That's what they're saying...who knows how true it is?
Meanwhile, HBO gets to spin this as, "Look at us! Here we come to save an American global institution! It's for the kids!" So, they get a 6 month exclusive on all new episodes. PBS will continue to run classic shows and then get the new stuff in 6 months. Also, the HBO episodes will be reduced from 60mins to 30mins.
Honestly, you could pick the best 30 episodes in the show's history and just run those on a rotation and kids would never notice. And if they did notice, they're too old developmentally to be watching the show.
The real rub here is that it has been scientifically proven that for kids whose parents cannot afford to send them to preschool (assuming they live in area where there is no public preschool) Sesame Street while by no means a replacement for brick and mortar preschool does provide "some" child development and is better at preparing preschoolers for kindergarten than no preschool or no Sesame Street at all. Obviously, since HBO is a pay to play network...the poor will not receive the new episodes as they likely can't afford the premium for HBO. But, they will still have 40+ years of Sesame Street episodes still airing daily on PBS.
I tell you this though...playgrounds are going to be a bitch now. Preschoolers are going to learn all about the term "spoilers"...
"Yo! Shameequa! You catch Elmo around the way yesterday? Dude was straight up racing his tricycle, beat Mr. Noodle and then crashed and wrecked his whip..."
"Dayyyyyyyyy-yum, Jamal! I ain't seen that one yet! Why'd you hafta' roll on up in here and tell me all that? Spoiler, YO!"
