Don't all hospitals have razor wire and video surveillance?

Looks like a place that does sterilizations and lobotomies.

Don't judge a book by it's cover. Landstuhl is a decent hospital. My family has used the er, one of my kids has seen a pediatric cardiologist there, and have had regular well checks for kids. I have also seen many lives saved there, troops coming in from down range. Lots of programs to help our wounded warriors too. Entire rooms filled with adaptable clothing for the wounded, recovery areas filled with gaming tvs, lounge areas and volunteers. Programs also for visiting family members such as the Fisher House and donated stuff from various on installation groups. I have personally volunteered with those programs, and the Stork Nesting programs as well (some countries we are in, dependent spouses and active duty moms are not allowed to give birth so the are flown to LRMC). It is not prisonlike at all. Several of my dear friends are part of the nursing staff as well and have been part of programs studying impact of certain types of combat injuries. Lastly my friend's mom had to be rushed there from a German hospital when she was stroking out and they were doing nothing for her. A top notch ER DOC as LMRC had to do emergency surgery to relieve the bleeding in her brain. The mama/grandmom was a command sponsored dependent of a deployed service member.
May look like a prison to you all but don't knock the good things that are being done there for our Troops and their families.

I went there in 2003-2004. The staff there was always professional and you could get make an appointment with no problem and no ridiculously long waits. It was also completely safe in a beautiful area of Germany. I used to love driving there on the autobahn.

I never understood why Walter Reed in DC was the polar opposite of Landstuhl in every quality.

It's exactly the opposite nowadays.

@ eesh

We called it "driving up the hill" when going to LRMC. Lived one exit north on the 62.The first Hospital Commander when I got there was not well liked. The second during that tour was awesome, now a two star. My neighbor and dear friend's dh was a Ortho Surgeon and spent many hours putting people back together with great care. Maybe it has changed since we left couple years ago according to OP. IDK.
Side note: Army was the only MWR to let the kids play tackle football (field was right across the street from hospital). AF only allowed Flag FB in you. Silly!
