The NYT didn't 'sanction' anything. It reported on both the Charlie Hebdo cover and the portrait of Pope Benedict. It simply chose to publish a photo of the portrait but the Charlie Hebdo cover. I do not see how that is hypocritical.

It is a double standard. They didn't want to offend their leaders with a Muhammad pic, but didn't care about offending catholics with a pope pic in condoms.
Shows a lack of journalism integrity. Some say there is a persecution of Christians in this country. Though I think that's overstated (persecution is happening in the middle east and it often results in death) I see why people feel persecuted.
We are supposed to accept gays rights and Muslim rights. But people don't want to accept Christians rights. Christians are the whipping boys. Its fine for the media to bash on them.
There are a lot of judgemental christian assholes out there, but there are also a lot of real Christians that try to do what's right. They may be against gay marriage and other things that are becoming acceptable, but they don't get militant or tell you how to run your life. They just try to set an example and help others

I think if one looks at this objectively, it's clear that the NY Times has acted in a hypocritical manner. Whether it's the pope, Jesus, or Mohammed - in both cases you have revered religious figures. In one case the NY times shows religious sensitivity and in the other case it doesn't. I'm Catholic. The picture of the pope isn't what bothers me so much but the fact being provocative is more important for some that being kind, or expressing one's opinion in a way that demonstrates respect for another point of view. What ever happened to being thoughtful, patient and kind? Why isn't this valued to the same degree? How can one group take the moral highground on any issue when they are willing to make broad sweeping statements about any other group. Whether you are Christian, Muslim, or atheist, liberal or conservative, democrat or republican- if you make broad sweeping statements regarding any group - well you can't really stand for real justice in anything because you yourself are being hypocritical. Does that make sense?

I wouldn't want to offend any righteous or decent religious person. I'm a non-believer but I know some people of faith who are alright.
The New York Times doesn't care about Christians- they've proven they won't blow shit up after the Piss Christ and Virgin Mary dung sculpture. The Times is worried shitless about offending Muslims.
I think a lot of the double standard is rooted in fear and discomfort liberals have with critiquing people of color or minority status. Which is racist.
