So...am I poor?

I live in FFX and my annual base pay will be slightly less than $100K this year. I am a senior IT tech who holds a "top tier" engineer title in my company. I know I am underpaid, but I want to know how terrible my number sounds. I guess even an average ops guy earns more these days.

My question is a serious one. I wonder how others can possibly afford a house in FFX while I cannot. Frustrated for all those years. I am not wasting money. I probably have no choice but take an advice from a financial adviser: Never retire.

If you are "top tier" engineer and you come to FFXU for salary advice, you are way overpaid and everyone with a brain should dump your company's stock immediately.

You're either lying or full of shit, which is it?

Feel a little better now. Thanks.

What logic led you to believe that I was lying? Do you seriously believe one can afford a single family house in FFX with a household income of just $100K/yr while he also has to save money for retirement, for kids college, etc?

No, you are not 'poor'. Not even close. You make what is probably the average white collar salary around here. Nonetheless, you feel poor because this is a high cost of living area and you can't afford to buy property.

I'm guessing you're single. If you had a spouse making an equivalent salary you should be able to buy at least a modest single family house in Fairfax. On your salary alone, you should still be able to buy a decent condo. Whether that is a good investment is another story. If you want something better, you need to move outside the county with all that entails. If you've been working for a while, hopefully you have accumulated a fair amount of savings to use for a downpayment.

There are lots of trade offs in Northern Virginia. You probably won't lack for job offers here (at least until an Hb1 visa takes your place or you get older), but it's hard to make it on what the rest of the country considers a very health salary.

Average IT professionals make around 120k in Fairfax County.

If you have a TSI clearance 150k+ plus depending on experience.

Are you talking about W2 jobs or contract jobs with no benefits?

I make less than that. Don't drive some dipshit Beamer, Lexus or Mercedes. Live in Fairfax Co and am quite happy. I'm glad you are making 6 figures, but that doesn't make you a decent person. The fact that you are trolling means that you're not a happy person. You need to elevate yourself by tearing others down (in your eyes)
