I think you will want to look at a revolver rather than a pistol. Rugers are a lot more affordable than Smith & Wesson revolvers.
Look at a Ruger GP100....it's a .357 Magnum, and you can get it with a six inch barrel.
You can also look at their single-action revolvers.....you can get a 44 Magnum Super Blackhawk for under $800. Just know that single-action revolvers require a lot of patience when reloading.
If you must get a pistol and want something badass, look at the 10mm Glock 20. 10mm is equivalent to a 41 Magnum, and people use these Glocks for handgun hunting. The downside is that 10mm ammo can be hard to find, but it punches much harder than a 45 ACP.
Lastly, you might want to look at an AK pistol. These are legally considered handguns; they fire 7.62x39 and use standard AK magazines. Of course you can't open carry with something like this.
