need a specific car repair...

I cracked the flex pipe on my catalytic converter. I've been told it can be cut out and a new one welded in for much cheaper, but not a lot of places want to do that.

Any recommendations on a service station or something that can do this?

Backlick Service Station

You will need to call and make an appointment because they are quite busy.

uhhh, I wouldn't get that torch anywhere near your gas tank while you're cutting. one spark is all it can take to ignite and then you and your car are fucked. much safer to use a saw.

Right...

'Cause there's not a single spark from a saw.

Most tanks today are plastic. So by all means use a heat shield. But it's not very dangerous to use a torch under the car. If you actually had combustible gas fumes you would smell them and their shouldn't be any venting of fumes to the atmosphere thanks to EPA regulations.

It looks like they used the torch to break the bolts free on the front flange. On the rear flange, they appeared to cut the bolts off. So it looks like flange fittings. I wouldn't weld something with flanges. The engineers had to convince some bean counter that you needed flanges because this part will need replaced periodically. If you can get the bolts free with a torch and wrench, you can just chisel them off.

The hard part for you, is that you don't have a lift. Exhaust work w/o a lift is tedious.

I dont think you have much automotive knowledge. The part you are torching is in the front of the car the tank is in the back. The cat and that pipe are designed to operate at 500 degrees F plus, for hours. The ignition point of gasoline is ~495 degrees F. As might be expected the fuel lines are not located near this area. That said cutting the bolt with a saw will certainly work but its going to generate a lot of heat and sparks too.

You can actually coat a pipe of metal with a generous amount of motor oil before sawing it to help reduce friction and sparking, I've seen it done plenty of times and it works like a charm. The oil lubricates the saw blade and draws heat away from the metal.

Its the truth. lying on your back with only a couple of feet clear underneath sucks. This repair looks pretty easy though I would give it a try with heating the nuts before I torched them as mentioned in the video. Unless you are comfortable under a car you will be happier paying a couple hundred in labor and getting a mechanic to do this for you. Personally Id enjoy a simple mechanical repair like this but I am very very cheap and like taking stuff apart I know wont total my car. Worst case with this one is you just drive to the mechanic anyway.
