A $548,000,000 loss last quarter.

Instead of planned closing 130 stores, they will now close 235 stores.

More low-talent, low-income workers to soon flood the market and join the executive action beneficiary workforce.

I think 2015 is not going to be a very good year for the United States.

Worse than previous years? It's just part of the orchestrated slow decline.

They were sliding even before Kmart. That was just a clusterfuck idea.

They're not high end enough to be Macy's, not chic enough to be Target, and not cheap enough to be Walmart. They're fucked. Be ready to short SHLD.

I would imagine the outdoor equipment and appliances workers will go to work for Lowe's and Home Depot.

Sears is the largest in home service company in the country. They do tractor, snow blower and generator repairs as well as hvac and plumbing. Sears owns A&E service as well and that division does work for Lowes, home depot, and many other retailer's. I have called sears and had a A&E truck show up at my house.

I would not let an A&E service worker near any of my appliances again. If you choose to get an extended warranty, confirm that they are not the company that will service the appliance. I have had a mom and pop shop fix their shoddy work.

Google how many complaints they have. See how long it takes form them to resolve an issue. They will say that they stopped by your home, and never even tried. They will waste your time...

You can imagine anything you want. The bottom line is that the market is already flooded with people who may (and usually may not) even be qualified to talk to customers. Add the flood of Obummer's low-wage illegals and you get even more not-very-skilled-or-educated people applying for the part-time jobs at Lowes and Home Depot.

The end lesson is that one of a kind is priceless and a million of the same thing is worth much less. These workers are a dime-a-dozen. Their value isn't that great, especially when 1,000 people are applying for the same shitty part-time job.

Sounds like your personal experience was not good. The fact remains however that Sears/A&E has a 94% customer satisfaction record. When you run over a thousand service calls a day you will always have a small percentage of unhappy clients for one reason or another. If they have a 94% satisfaction rate then that will mean that there are 60 clients a day that are not happy. That makes for plenty of bad reviews but does not take away from the FACT that Sears/A&E has he highest rate of customer satisfaction of any in home service company in the history of this country.
Sure you can find some little companies who run less than a hundred calls a week so they have very few complaints but most of them have a much lower overall percentage of customer satisfaction than Sears/A&E.

Probably unlikely. They have already ruined the Kenmore brand by trying to save money by making everything cheaper.

What I'm more concerned about is my Craftsman lifetime warranty going to be any good after Sears folds?

Sears does not make anything. They are a retailer. Everything kenmore is made by others. Everything craftsman is made by others.

Spewing unsubstantiated FACTS, facts that are false. Quit lying!!
Here is one example, there are many many others. http://m.yelp.com/biz/a-and-e-factory-service-bethesda

Don't purchase a service agreement without finding out who the primary service provider is. If it is A&E, DO NOT purchase the agreement! Seriously, you will regret you did. A&E is the bottom of the bottom.

The service side of sears/A&E will live on maybe under different ownership. They are the most profitable division of the company by far.

So how are these profits generated?
Unfortunately the customer is held captive to who the warranty provider chooses the customer must use.

Some more reviews.

A&E = Nightmare

If you choose to purchase an extended warranty for your appliances, ask who the service provider will be. If it is A&E, save yourself the aggravation and take a pass on it.

Thanks for that link! It shows that there were only 301 complaints for a company that runs between 55,000 and 60,000 service calls a year. I knew we were good but I did not know we were that good!

I have to say, Sears is the only store I truly have faith in when it comes to having knowledgeable employees for appliances. We have only had the best of service, and their employees always seem to know what they are talking about, and are EXPERIENCED. We always use Sears too if we ever run into any issues with our appliances. I really hope Sears doesn't close, or if it changes I hope that at least their appliance section lives on in some form. I've also found the paint department employees really helpful too.

Hey Sears guy! Do your math a little better. Sears AE averages over 3000 service calls a day. Yes we are the best service company in the history of the world!

From the sears service page,

Service - it's one way that we distinguish ourselves from other retailers. With over 8,600 service technicians making more than 11 million service calls annually, this business delivers a broad range of retail-related residential and commercial services in all 50 states and Puerto Rico under the Sears Parts & Repair Services and A&E Factory Service brand names. Commercial and residential customers can obtain parts and repair services for all major brands of products such as home appliances, lawn and garden equipment, home electronics, floor-care products, and heating and cooling systems. Smaller items for repair can be brought into Sears Parts & Repair Centers located throughout the United States or to any Sears Full-line Store. Customers can also purchase service contracts, product protection agreements, product installation services and Kenmore residential heating and cooling systems.

I used to buy all my major appliances at sears - us appliances were good a long time ago and since the ones made in the 60's were built to last 30-40 years they only came out of service a decade ago. So when I replaced them I expected the same. Thing is a washinging machines cost 158 bucks in 1960 and today, 50 yrs later, are only 300 bucks. The cost of an auto has gone up by 15x but the cost of an appliance has only gone up 2x. The products made today are just made from cheap stuff.

Appliances are made to be disposable not repaired. Generally you can expect a major mechanical appliance (fridges last a little longer) to last 5 years. They usually break down in under 3 years and are only worth one or two repairs. I learned to repair my own not so much for the money savings (significant) but I found that even after 2-3 visits by the sears repairman they could not fix the appliance - I could fix it in one shot. It took me less of my time (staying home half a day each time waiting for repairmen) and my money to do it myself. When repairing I got to see what they use to build these machines - not good. Plastic or soft metal for high torsion parts.

I had one soft metal ratchet in a machine that would literally wear out at exactly 18 months - I replaced it 3 times. It was a $40 part that required a $25 special tool to replace - about $50 per replacement DIY. Had I had a serviceperson repair it it would have cost $120 for the call plus another $160 ($280 total) for the repair EACH time plus a minimum of 1.5 visits to repair (that would be 6 hours of my time waiting for the repair person). The cost of replacing the machine was about $400

We fill our landfills with crappy 5 year-old appliances and think our 400 dollar washing machines are a value.

I read a book a few years ago called The Walmart Effect

It had a very interesting chapter about Toro lawn mowers. Toro wanted to sell their mowers in Walmart because Walmart has such a huge footprint in commerce. They went to Walmart and Walmart said your mowers cost too much, you have to make them cheaper. The only way to make them as cheap as Walmart wanted was to make them junk. It turns out Walmart's philosophy on lawn mowers is "design them to last one year and make the consumer buy a new one every year". Bottom line- don't buy a Toro mower at Walmart......it's not what you think it is.

I fear this is exactly where Sears is headed if they want to survive.

Toro wasn't the first to buckle under that pressure. John Deere was backed into the same corner with Home Depot. They came out with a "residential" series of push/walk behind mowers. They're regretted it ever since considering Home Depot dropped that line because of shoddy product concerns. They fell into the same trap with their garden tractors that are sold as riding mowers. Now that they're stuck, it's nothing more than a loss leader for John Deere.

Wow! I must be either lucky or good. I bought my first house in 1984 and upgraded to a new(used) house twice. I have never had an appliance less than 10 years old die or require service. I have replaced 10+ year old washers and dryers with GE or Hotpoint products and had no problems with them at all. I replace water heaters at 10 years to cut down the risk of a rupture. My wife forced me to replace all the kitchen appliances in our first house because the existing ones were harvest gold in color but still working at 12 years old.

Sears has good prices on appliances, better than HD or Lowes.

unions in the USA used to say "don't buy from sears it's all imports". this is in the 80's when USA factories were threatened or even before

sears had been an import company quite happy to profit off imports at anyone else's expense. they only sold usa goods if there was no cheap import (NOTE: during the 80's that was almost every product period, all quality USA, all products. fucking pepole like nancy pelosi and hillary are who killed that off)

today sears maybe sells maybe more USA than say walmart does and none of the people who were saying buy usa have jobs or are even alive, under obama

the fact is usa helped the f'ing foreigners and gave them loans and was way ahead, then foreigners then decided instead of war they'd flood the usa borders to such effect we couldn't possibly get them out. political families profited by allowing it.

Most things made in the USA are inferior products. I will never buy another American car or truck unless they can produce a decent product consistently. That is not likely to happen anytime soon. I trusted Ford one time and I trusted GM one time and I got fucked both times.

Let me guess you rent to singles and couples without kids. A family using a washer will cause wear such that it will require repair in 3-5 years. The cost of repair is usually half replacement. I would also be willing to bet your tenants are responsible for repairs under a couple hundred bucks so you never even know about them.

Anyway if you own and appliance and have kids you will wear it out faster than a couple in their 70's and you will need repair sooner than later. This is the site i where I learned to fix all my appliances and saved thousands of dollars http://fixitnow.com/

I do rent out to families, and nope, they call me if a kitchen appliance breaks.

I changed a the inlet valve one of the dishwashers 3 years ago, cost $18, other than that 0 issues.

You must be buying Frigidaire appliances, and calling an in home specialist for quotes if you feel the need to replace appliances every 3 years.

Well either im unlucky or you are lucky. I was buying Whirlpool. The dishwashers were the worst. I went through 2 defective units within the first 6 mo. under warranty. The third did last 7 years but I repaired it annually after year 4 and put up with having to take it apart and clean scum out of the steam vents semi annually every year in service. It was really gross. My Whirlpool dryer was solid. The washer was okay but a soft metal washer ratchet on the drive would go every 2 years and I had to replace a lid switch. That one was running fine after 8 years with those repairs.

What brand do you purchase that you never have to service these machines?
