Meade Skelton is Good Country...
Posted by: A Taste of Meade ()

This appears to be a legitimate review of Meade's work written by a Tumblr Fan

http://thatreadjusterspirit.tumblr.com/post/5456784096/meade-skelton-is-good-country

So a while back, I wrote a little about why I think Johnny Cash doesn’t fall as squarely into that constantly-evoked realm of “good country” as folks like to pretend. So, what is good country? Two words: Meade Skelton.

I’d like to start by explicating what I don’t like about Meade. Meade has a lousy sense of politics and history. He bought into the moonlight and magnolias image of Gone with the Wind while all decent people were hoping that the enslaved folks on the O’Hara plantation would pull a Nat Turner by the novel’s end. As a Virginian, Meade’s politics seriously do bother me and yet, as a Virginian, there is a great appeal to the rest of his act that almost redeems him.

Meade Skelton’s music is a retreat from outlaw country’s transpatial swagger and stereotyped posturing. Meade presents country identity has being both suburban (“My Loudoun County Home”) and urban (any of his marvelous songs about Richmond), and imbues the locales in the songs with qualities external to his control. I think that’s what’s so fascinating about agency in non-outlaw singers’ music— while masculinity is typically conflated with agency and power, non-outlaw country shows a meeker masculinity where the narrator is more likely to be acted upon than to independently act. Indeed, one can’t even imagine the words, “I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die”; instead Skelton is busy at work documenting the day-to-day interactions between the individual and his/her surroundings, from the seemingly ancient elements of RVA to the aisles of Meade’s beloved now-defunct grocery chain, Ukrop’s.

Furthermore, Meade is careful not to overuse twang and honky-tonk elements in his music. His singing voice and piano skills evoke the countrypolitan sound far more than Hank, Jr.-style cowboy kitsch. Even alt-country (hell, especially alt-country) hinges on an anemic view of what does and does not fit into the ambit of country music. Meade has reached deep into the genre’s history and has found a smooth, quirky sound which attempts to dilate the narrowing boundaries of country. His reimagining of country allows him to trade in the themes of love, loss, and liquor for location and social awkwardness.

Meade isn’t the second-coming of Faron Young, nor is he a competent scholar of Southern history, but he is a Virginia original who is unafraid to buck the trends of modern country, and I respect him for that. Not to mention that “Alcohol is Poison” is the best drinking song I’ve yet found.

So 1 person in the world doesn't find Meade or his music trite, mediocre, and frivilous. Good for them. Most people think he sucks, and there's no way around that.

The best Meade can do is come up from something over 2 1/2 years old?

This is hardly a 'rave' review.

It seems genuine, and proves that someone outside of Meade's immediate family thinks his music is relevant.

The guy hated Meade's politics 2 1/2 years ago.
I wonder what he thinks now after "chicken at Krogers'.

It's the old story; local sites, history, talent is never appreciated by locals. I wonder how many native new Yorkers have ever visited the Statue of Liberty or Radio Music Hall. It is the tourist and out-of-towners who spend and patronize those sites. Meade's situation is the same; it is the non-locals who buy his disks on amazon.com and attend his gigs.

So I am to take seriously some guy who doesn't think Johnny Cash is good country, but Meade Skelton is good country?

I am reminded at Grandpa Jones funeral, Randy Travis said country stars of today couldn't hold a candle to Grandpa Jones. Randy was right; country music had a passion to it, and/or invoked a clear narrative in its ballads. Mid-20th century country music spoke of simple life choices and consequences, it spoke of hard work and hard times. Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynne, Hank Williams, Grandpa Jones, and George Jones were all clear story tellers with their music, much like the minstrels of centuries past. Unlike many of the great country songs, the Meade repartee of Fat No More, Hipsters Ruin Everything, and Sweet Tea do not tell a compelling story; they reek of self-importance and a disdain for the world outside of his myopic world view. That is not good country music. If I wanted happy or fantasy talk with simplistic lectures in verse and music, I would turn to the Wiggles, not Meade.

At least Meade can carry a tune. johnny Cash could not sing worth a damn. Im sorry but its true. When I hear Cash its like listening to my old tone deaf Grandpa try to sing. How he ever became a "legend" is beyond me.

Johnny Cash was not melodic singer. Hank Williams was not an exceptional singer. What puts both these men into legendary status is their songwriting ability. Both men are in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Willie Nelson is not a melodic singer, and he is legendary for being the Songwriters Hall Of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

John Denver could only hit three notes and he is in the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Are you saying Bob Dylan isn't worth a thing because he can't sing well? Are you excited for the return of American Idol?

Will Sweet Tea, and Fat no more allow Meade Skelton to cruise into any "Hall of Fame" status? I doubt it.

Disagree about John Denever, he had a remarkable voice compared to the others you mentioned. Overall, Meade is better vocally than all of those singers. Songwriting is only one aspect of musicianship.

Real people would rather listen to someone with an authentic voice than Meade's blank Milquetoast vocals.

Song writing may only be one aspect, but for those who cannot write at least they have the ability to choose songs that mean something to them.

Bad songs are bad songs. That is what Meade writes, that is what Meade records.

And people stay away.

Meade's voice is authentic. He's not all American Idol.
Also, he writes decent songs. They are catchy and interesting. People are not running away in that photo. They enjoy it!

You can look at that photo and claim people are enjoying Meade's music making?

Which one?
the kid in the Pain shirt looking the other way?

Of course, you also think Meade writes 'catchy' tunes.

Johnny Cash sucked and George Jones was overrated. They weren't good singers, you're crazy if you think Meade isn't much more honed and melodic than them two bums.

Meade has gotten a fair number of breaks.

He has done morning shows, people have seen and heard him.

He is just too stiff and unlikable of a performer that nobody wants to see much more of him after they have seen a little.

Whether any one of us like or dislike him doesn't matter.

People have seen Meade and they turn away.

He has had more than his fair share of chances and overall, people don't what he offers.

I agree! He reminds me a little of a young Sean Connery
Meade is charismatic. He has what the old performers used to call "presence". Most of the folks who side against Meade would not know a talented performer from the original New Kids on the Block.
