And the District wasn’t the only city in the region to appear on the list: Arlington came in at No. 10, owing to the presence of the Arlington Gay and Lesbian Alliance as well as bars like Freddie’s in Crystal City and Galaxy Hut in Clarendon.

So how did The Advocate come up with its list? They looked at such things as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender elected officials; bars on Out magazine’s list of the 200 greatest gay bars in the world (the Duplex Diner and JR’s both showed up on that list); and concerts performed by Mariah Carey, Pink, Lady Gaga or the Jonas Brothers. This comes less than two months after The New York Times called D.C. “the gayest place in America.”

A friend told me the "gayest" place he's ever seen was some town in Alabama. He went there to visit his gay son and was shocked that the whole town was gay.

DC seems like it would be very low on the list, well behind Miami, San Fran, New York, LA, New Orleans, ect....

Alabama and Mississippi are both huge closet gay populations. They live in small backwoods towns.

A lot the radical racial white supremacy groups are closet gays. They'll say they hate the gays publicly but have secret "gay fests" in their communes.

I was just thinking that. I can't imagine how Provincetown could be any more gay friendly (not that there's anything wrong with that). It's the only place I've been where heterosexuals stand out like a sore thumb. It's really quite fascinating, although a little awkward if you're with a small child ('Mommy - why are those guys kissing each other?') it's a great place to visit, if you keep an open mind.
