The photographers want for the models to pay for the photography services.
The models want for the photographers to pay for the modeling services.
This does not make any sense at all.

The photographers on Model Mayhem are creepy guys with cameras. They just want to find some naive wannabe and take nude pics of them to add to their personal fap collection.

I know a lot of models that post there and on OMP. They know that many of the photogs are hacks, but they actually pay the models well.
Good photographers have models clambering to work with them and get paid well.
The reality is there are a few good photogs and a few good models.
If you're new at it, it's a good place to find people to work with, but be careful. There are as many psycho models as there are creepy photographers.

Model Mayhem gets an F from the BBB.
Almost all photographers on Model Mayhem compensate models with Time for Print.
There is no money on Model Mayhem; it's creepy guys with cameras, and clueless "models" that think nude or semi-erotic pictures will make them a star.

Oh, there is definitely money on MM. I know models that make a decent living from nerdy hacks that pay them $75-100 per hour. A typical shoot goes for around 2-3 hours and good models do 2-3 shoots per day. Tax free of course.
There are some really good models on MM that go all over the country doing shoots.
