I don't understand. My taxes got raised so we could attack Iraq for 9/11 and find WMDS...fine...I support that. However, the cost I was told and the actual reality are very different. It's as if I was lied to...but I know that couldn't be, so I turn to you....the enlightened citizens of Fairfax County to fill me in on why Americans are still in Iraq in an armed conflict, even though the search for WMDS ended years ago. Is Osama there? Are we still looking for WMDS? I'm not really sure of our objective at this point. Sorry to offend anybody, but I'm trying to connect the dots, and this situation, by any story, doesn't really make any sense. Enlighten me.

When the Americans elected the Democrats in 2006, it was to pull us out of Iraq, right? So why are we still there?

There's the reality the public believes, and there's the reality behind the scene.

I don't know the full story, I'm not sure anyone really does. All I know is that
there are various ideological groups operating inside and outside of our government, sometimes they work together, sometimes they oppose each other, but they all have enormous influence on the reality that our government acts upon, and the policies chosen to deal with those realities.

We're in Iraq because one ideology needs to project power into the middle east, and Saudi Arabia kicked us out. We're in Iraq because of the influence of AIPAC on our foreign policy. We're in Iraq because 9/11 created a traumatized public willing to accept just about anything, so it was the perfect time to do it. We're in Iraq because there wasn't enough bombing targets in Afghanistan to satisfy Donald Rumsfeld, and besides, it was the perfect opportunity to prove his theories about the "Revolution in Military Affairs." We're in Iraq because the people who control foreign policy also benefit from increased military spending. We're in Iraq because nothing else gives a president carte blanche like a long, drawn-out war. We're in Iraq for the same reason we invaded Panama -- Saddam and Noriega were loose threads from when Bush Sr was CIA director, and once an ruthless dictator is no longer beneficial, he must be liquidated. We're in Iraq because of oil. We're in Iraq because there's lots of people with brown skin there. We're in Iraq because that foreign minister guy was annoying.

Take your pick. Any or all of these might be the real answer. None of the answers you'll hear from the administration or their ideological supporters has proven to be true.
