As to health, clearly life expectancies are longer than they've ever been, on a world-wide basis. As to better fed, the world's history is one of repeated famine, and there are definitely fewer of those now, and they are more localized. As to education, world literacy rates have fallen steadily for the past 40 years and more and are lower than ever.

Can't say as to violence, but there have clearly been more violent periods. As to tolerance, it's hard to see how that can be quantified, but it's at least arguable.

Well, this probably isn't what Obama meant, but in the longest sense possible, he was almost certainly right. We're talking prehistory here but like as not, most of your ancestors simply wouldn't believe how safe your world is. Back in the day traveling farther than a day's walk without substantial backup was pretty much suicide, and it was probably vastly worse for women.

Republicans believe creating massive debt and starting endless wars creates less violence.

After they set major global precitence of war pre-emption they wonder why the world is more violent.

Not to mention that the invaded the one country that had actually disarmed itself.

They're just really really fucking stupid.

There's lots of evidence showing that the world has become less violent over the course of history.

Stephen Pinker, the Harvard social scientist, wrote a long and excellent book on the subject.
