Essentially, Iraq no longer exists. When your capital can be occupied with no fight. They have basically been invited in. My guess is the Kurds keep the northeast of the Iraq and create a new country, the Sunnis keep the western half and it becomes "part of" eastern Syria, and the rest becomes part of Iran.

I think Turkey will get involved soon. They really don't like the Kurds, and the Kurdish struggle for independence has always spilled over into Turkish territory.
I really don't think Iraq will succumb to Balkanization, too many nations have an interest in keeping Iraq functional.

I think that the latter is becoming more likely. A major obstacle to anything along those lines was that Turkey has been staunchly against any kind of Kurdish state. But that's changed more recently. I'd guess that they view the Iraqi Kurds as much less of a threat than the psycho-Sunnis. That would give them a significant buffer from all of that mess and would take a lot of the wind out of the sails of their own separatist movement if there's some kind of Kurdish 'homeland' established.

Just this morning the Huffington Post was talking all about how Obama would have an "unlikely ally" I believe is how they put it, if he decided to do anything about the situation in Iraq.
Guess they forgot Obama doesn't do shit about anything and learns everything by watching tv or reading a newspaper.
