Never Forget VT Tech! Massacre, April 16, 2007

Seven Years Ago Today

The Virginia Tech massacre was a school shooting that took place on April 16, 2007, on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia, United States. Seung-Hui Cho, a senior at Virginia Tech, shot and killed 32 people and wounded 17 others in two separate attacks, approximately two hours apart, before committing suicide (another six people were injured escaping from classroom windows).[1][2] The massacre is the deadliest shooting incident by a single gunman in U.S. history and one of the deadliest by a single gunman worldwide.[3]

Moved by the tragedy, Ms. Wallace, an artist in California, originally created a set of 32 pastel portraits for each person killed on April 16th, which was either sent to each person’s family or is being kept in storage. 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.: From Then to Now: An Exhibition in Two Parts about April 16 - Newman Library, First floor

The University Libraries, in partnership with Student Centers and Activities and Ashley Maynor’s Self-Reliant Film, presents, From Then to Now: An Exhibition in Two Parts about April 16th.

Part I of the exhibition will be held in the Newman Libraries’ Multipurpose room where a digital gallery of eight screens will display photos and short films.

Three screens in the exhibit contain photos that were sent in after April 16 by community members, faculty and staff. Two screens display photos of the Hokies United memorials which were created on the Drillfield after April 16.

The two films in the exhibit are by Ashley Maynor and comprise a home movie of the early Drillfield Memorial and footage of Virginia Tech from Maynor’s film in progress, The Story of the Stuff, which explores how we collectively mourn and memorialize in a time where tragedies are experienced “first hand-once removed” on the web and television.

Part II of the exhibition will be held directly across the hallway from Part I, in the Special Collections room, and include a physical display of condolence items. These items were created by people from all over the world during the months following April 16. The two parts show how the creative process helped many move towards healing and created a path out of the darkness of grief.

Isn't that what the dead bad guy wanted ... to be remembered?

It's chilling. He was a college senior. He would've graduated and return to this area to work as a government contractor. With a TS cleated job, there would be nothing to stop him.

Do they get posthumous degrees? If they do, are they any good.

If not, then a good reason to have been armed.

This is good reminder that crazy people with guns are everywhere in the US. So kiss your kids in the morning and tell them you love them.

Make sure they have their concealed carry permit and a good pistol first.

Cho is the original victim here.

Cho turned the bullies and the nay sayers into the new victim hood status.

Cho had every right for revenge.

For every slight of ignorance or outright avoidance to being an outright bully then you deserved to be shot dead.

Amen to Cho and I know he is in Heaven.

He was ahead of his time.

Tech now has a drone program. Killing people for pay from a distance without emotional involvement would've been a good fit.

While we should never forget the tragic incident at VT, it's also very unfortunate that Gov. McAuliffe traveled there today to use it as a backdrop for some of his anti-weapons initiatives. For gosh sakes, go there because you want to share some compassion - but lay off the politics for a day.

Idiot!

If only one of those 32 victims was carrying a HK45 or Glock 41. Don't be a victim. Buy a AR-15 or a Glock.

Right because attacking the problem would be like stupid.

How about honoring the victims with a solution and not letting the same happen again to others!

Stop being a republican GOP moron! Fix shit!

Oh, I'll fix it. It's called "concealed carry". More students will be achieving the concealed carry status.

Taking away guns isn't a "fix" for these issues. Get real. If you think that is the only solution, you're putting your face down the wrong rabbit hole.

Think:

1) More support for detecting and dealing with mental health issues.

2) Studying the link between violent movies and then future violent acts.

3) Studying the link between violent video games and future violent acts.

4) Studying the link between music with hateful lyrics and violent acts. When rappers refer to bitches and ho's in their music, don't women feel degraded? Where's the outrage there?

People will ALWAYS have access to guns. ALWAYS. They might be achieved through illegal means, but they will always get them if they want to - and if they're willing to pay a price.

Fix the other issues with society and these kinds of crimes will drop. Again, focusing only on the gun here and indicating that a gun kills people is like saying that a spoon made Rosie O'Donnel fat. Got it? Good! Who's the moron now?

We can't stop barge loads of illegal immigrants, illegal drugs, or counterfeit merchandise from coming into country and guns would be no exception. If you want to buy some real firepower though, call the ATF and tell them you work for a Mexican drug cartel.

Oh, and one more thing about VT. How come there have been a few sexual assaults in the dorms / stairwells in the past few months, but charges were never pressed? It seems VT needs to establish some more protection for the female students on campus in order to protect them. How come these events never make it into the news where all can read about them?

It seems a lot of stuff that takes place within university keeps pretty close to home. I'll bet if we were to line up all the crimes that happened between 2007 and today that happened at the campus, people would be quite astounded and realize that many issues need to be addressed. Sure, again I'll state, the tragedy in 2007 was most unfortunate. However, if VT and those who are so inclined to stop gun violence would broaden their views a bit, they'd see that there are a lot of vulnerabilities that should have a higher priority at getting fixed as opposed to banning weapons.

a major step in resolving ptsd is facing the perpetrator of the crime for an eye to eye "chat". really working through all steps may help.

"a ptsd workbook"

it's not as bad cptsd, which they think kills ants that mislead other ants (in and bridges causing mass death of ants), they think. soldiers likely get cptsd when they have continual flashbacks it can kill them.
